    3.0 Merc. problems

I have a 1984 3.0L mercruiser which seems to be having carb issues. It can be hard to start initially and trys to die out at about 3k when on the water. Once it gets past 3k it will rev out over 5k. Also, after it is running and you shut it down for say an hour, it starts very hard. If you start...

    new style exuast bellows??

I have a 1978 alpha 1 outdrive and was wondering if I should use the new style exuast bellows which is suppose to relieve back pressure at idle or just use the original bellows for it? When I look them up they say for 1983-up but my manual shows them and don't say you can't use them on older...

    steering arm access holes

My transom (1978-mercruiser) shield does not have the access plugs to get to the bolt on the steering arm. My manual says you can drill holes and plug them to get access to them. Has anyone done this? Where do I get the parts to do this? My motor is out and I still cannot get anything on the...

    How much outdrive play?

My outdrive has about a 1/4 inch to 1/2 of play side to side without the steering arm in the transom moving. Is this ok or normal, or should there really be no play. If it's normal I will probably let it ride but if it's considered bad then I will need to do something. thanks, jaybird

    changing motors/help

I am putting a 1984 3.0 mercruiser in my boat which originally had a 2.5L/120hp mercruiser which was a 1978. Everything seems ok except the manifold riser. The 3.0 riser has different size bellows than mine, also the riser ports are different. I see I can use the riser from the 3.0 but the...

    Something is wrong here??

I am running a 14by19 cast prop with a 1978 Imperial 16ft Tri-hull and my speedo only reads 27mph at 4600 RPMs. My fishfinder reads even slower at 24-25 mph. This boat is a 2.5L 120hp. Shouldn't I be getting at least something like 35mph at that RPM?? It doesn't seem right, most people I hear...

    2.5L 120hp compression?

what should the compression be in a 1978 2.5L 120hp. My compression reads between 120-125 for all four cylinders. Is this kinda low, what would a new one read? I know my variance is good between cylinders but will I be down on power with compression only in the 120's??

    steering??

My steering is so loose that I can easily move the outdrive by hand and it will spin my steering wheel. Is this normal? If not, why would it be this loose? Never delt with steering before but I would think it should have some tension on it. 1978 16ft Imperial 120hp 2.5 Pre-Alpha
