Hey guys I had an idea form in my head about working on the boat during the winter. My boat has a multitude of problems that ill be asking more about in later posts, but I had an idea for running the motor and not having to re-winterize every time I fix something and need to test it.
Would...
I don’t have a spark gap tester, but it is definitely getting fuel because I can smell it getting really rich a couple minutes before it dies, then I can’t start it for 10-20 minutes.
I’ve already gone through (I believe) the whole fuel system - I checked the pickup tube, anti siphon valve...
Hmmmm now I’m not sure, points ignition means it has points and condensers right?
Honestly I’ve been assuming the whole time that TB IV was the points ignition.. here’s a picture of my distributor if that helps
No I haven’t been able to find anything like that, and it’s a Jasper rebuild so I...
I believe I have a bad coil. I have a 1993 Mercruiser 5.7 Thunderbolt IV with the point ignition, does anybody have the specs for what my coil should be reading? I have a pertonix coil but it’s not labeled so I have no idea what OHMs is should be reading at.. I’m wanting to go back to OEM so if...
Ok thanks again for the help Scott
I’ve got a couple stupid questions, I’m having a hard time setting the timing. With the thunder bolt iv, do I need to have cylinder 1 at TDC, and is there an easier way to do this with just one person? Turning a wrench and trying to feel air through the spark...
Ahh I see, thanks for the info. It’s not a no start issue, it runs for about 5 minutes at idle with no load, then stalls out
I’ll clean the ignition sensor today and reset the timing
What about the driveshaft? I remember them telling me it was groved, so they replaced it and a couple seals where gear oil was leaking.
Sorry I should have added that info in my original question but I forgot about it
Well damn, the last owner had a jasper rebuild put in 3+ years ago so I wonder if it happened during that process. I’ve had the boat for a year myself, lucky it hasn’t gone yet.. yikes
I’ve got my fuel pressure tester, I just need some adapter to fit on my 3/8ths line. Problem is I can’t really test it “under load” without getting stranded on the lake.. once it stalls out, it’s pretty hard to get it started again (most of the time)
I’ve been having issues with my 5.7 and while I was looking behind the motor, I noticed a bolt was missing from what I’m assuming is a water line. I’m wondering if this would’ve happened when my mechanic replaced the bellows earlier this season. The other bolt and hose clamp looks pretty new.
I come armed with new information once again
I was out at the boat yesterday and I think I may have found the issue, or at least part of it. The distributor cap and rotor don’t seem like the correct part for my motor, it has a vacuum fitting behind it with nothing connected, also the plug wires...
That’s what my thought was, but I’ve run through and tested everything in the fuel system I can think of. Im thinking ignition now but I don’t even know where to start with that
