I am putting a new water pump on my Merc. 40 hp (1982) and the manual says that I need to torque the bolts to 30 in-lb. I dont have a in-lb torque wrench and am wondering if there is a way around this. Can I get it to tight? I realize that I could break the plastic housing but will it work...
I am not familure with a torque wrench that torques to inches - lb I dont own one but I only remember them as ft-lb. Do normal torque wrenches have in-lb as well as ft-lb?
is it necessary to apply a sealant to new gaskets before putting them in place? I am replacing my water pump and have never done this procedure before.

I cant for the life of me, without breaking it, figure out how to remove the base to the water pump. I have gotten everything else apart without a problme but the base wont budge. Can anyone help here?
