    Outdrive failure?

Drive was pulled. It appears prop seal failed. Both upper and lower units were destroyed. Good news is coupler, gimble and bellows are in good condition. My plan at this point is a used outdrive. I know I need to get a drive with the appropriate gear ratio and with the V8 it appears that is...

    Outdrive failure?

Thank you for the responses. Let's say it's the coupler, which I understand is an engineered failure point. A failed coupler would indicate another issue, such as engine alignment, gimble bearing, or an issue in the outdrive, correct?

    Outdrive failure?

If the input shaft seal fails does that mean the entire outdrive is ruined or just the upper unit?

    Outdrive failure?

I have a 1989 4Winns with a Alpha One, Gen One outdrive. Bought it the summer before last. Took it our for a spin this past weekend and after about 20-30 minutes of operation (mostly at WOT) I made the turn to begin heading back to the marina and I got a big bang, engine revs and loss of...

    Replacement Prop Selection

That is the thing. It "sounds" like it runs like a top. It idles and accelerates smoothly, all the way to WOT. Maybe the tach is off? How would I check that? Sorry Scott. I sent my reply before I saw your question about the tach.

    Replacement Prop Selection

So, it has been a while since I started this thread, but I was able to get out on the water this past weekend and gathered some updated data. My rpm maxed at 3300 WOT (not the 4000 I originally reported) with a top speed of 32 mph. It currently is pitched at 19, and as stated above, the prop...

    Replacement Prop Selection

So it sounds like moving from a 19 to 17 might be warranted. What about blade #? I have a 3 blade prop now, would 4 blades provide any advantages or create disadvantages?

    Replacement Prop Selection

Is the drive ratio stamped somewhere on the outdrive and if so where would I look for that?

    Replacement Prop Selection

I was finally able to get down to the boat and got the info off of the barrel of the prop. Its is difficult to see as the prop is in bad shape. It has a small chunk missing off one of the blades. It is aluminum, and the barrel number is: 48 78120 A40 19P.

    Replacement Prop Selection

Thanks, all. I am going to check out the stamp on the prop this weekend and report back.

    Replacement Prop Selection

What type and pitch is on it now? I am not sure. Would this be marked on the prop itself? It has three blades. Current WOT speed using GPS? With 2 people 28 to 32 mph Current WOT RPM? 4000 RPM

    Replacement Prop Selection

Hello All. I want to replace the prop on my boat- a 1989 Mercruiser Alpha One, Gen One with a 5.7-liter engine. The boat itself is a 4Winns Santara 210. There appear to be a gazillion options and I am trying to figure out where to even begin. I am not even sure the prop that is on it now is...

1989 Four Winns Carrara Mercruiser Alpha 1 Bellows/Gimble Replacment

So I was hunting around a bit and thinking about getting a Mercruiser Shop Manual- not one of the Clymer ones but rather OEM. Is there one available here on Iboats? If not I will hunt around on ebay for a hard copy or see about getting a digital copy.

1989 Four Winns Carrara Mercruiser Alpha 1 Bellows/Gimble Replacment

I was planning on an off-season routine bellows/gimble (if necessary) service. I purchased the boat last year and PO was not sure when it was last done. I just received a quote from a local outfit that estimates $1200 to $1500 parts and labor. Their labor fee is $135/hr. Is this what I...
