Anyone have any tips or tricks to get the driveshaft assembly out of the upper Merc Alpha Gen 2 housing? Had it soaking in PB Blaster for 24 hrs and still not budging. Yes, the spanner nut is already loose.
Trying to hunt down a low acceleration problem, I decided to check the compression in the block. It is a 2001 EFI with TBI 5.0L.
All cylinders are between 60 and 75 psi. Maybe a bad compression gauge ? What else would cause ALL cylinders to be low like this ?
Maybe something with the timing...

I have a '99 Merc 5.0L with the TBI EFI. There are 2 sensors in the thermostat housing. One on strbrd side is one stud, tan wire. The other one is on the port side of the housing and has a black and a yellow wire (2 wire plug). If I keep this 2-wire sensor unplugged, boat runs good, but...

Upon digging deep on the Net, I "think" I have the MEFI 3 system. (pics below).
Now, this part is confusing. I thought the MEFI system is only on fuel injected engines, but mine is a 2 bbl...
Noticed water in bilge a few days ago. Inspected the drive, found a clamp that looked like it was cut. The inner drive bellows clamp.
Seems like the drive cut it while pivoting left/right or raising up/down , but how is this possible ? IS IT possible ??

When you unplug it while motor is idling, do your RPM change ?
Because when I unplug mine, nothing happens to idle speed.

Re: 1985 alpha 1 gen 1 won't kick into gear, engine shuts off.
Lift up your outdrive as high as you can, and look into it. The shoe and rod should be inside of each other. (It's the one with the oil drop in the pic ;) )
Replaced all my bellows this winter. Pulled engine to replace oil pan gasket and rear main seal.
When I started her back up again, the idle RPM was around 1900. It was nice and smooth idling, no shaking, sputtering, racing, etc. Just stayed at 1900.

Here's the pic of the wire that's loose. Seems to be a ground according to my tester... comes from the same loom as all the slave solenoid wires. Can't find a bolt small enough where this would connect.
And btw, already replaced the O'Reilly...
Hey guys, just replaced my rear main seal and oil pan gasket on the 5.0L.
Started her up outside on the ground. Fired right up, no leaks, was happy.
Put the motor back in boat, let the boat sit a couple days outside..... and then it poured rain outside and I was at work...
I've looked thru the manual but can't seem to find the diagrams of the thin metal pieces that run between the block and the oil pan gasket. They lay right on top of the gasket and get sandwiched in-between the actual block and oil pan gasket.
Anyone know what they're for ? Should they be...
