Ok I got the starter straightend out, runs like a top. On to the original problem, not pumping water.
taking a tip from the guys on this board I removed the thermostat housing and no water came out. I replaced a new but deformed impeller, problem solved new one created...

I am restoring a 62' Evinrude 40 hp Lark for the orignal owner.
After all the preliminary checks I set off to crank it up and found the starter motor is wrecked. The bearings are out, the armature is worn unven and the brushes barely reach.
I haven't had much luck finding one on the web...
