    Merc. A-1, Gen 2, Drive Unit makes noises when shifting

    When shifting from neutral to forward or to reverse, I hear a grinding sound like something is loose. Drive shifts into forward and reverse gears OK, prop spins both ways. What could a dumb newbie like me have messed up now? Somebody, please help!

    Hey guys, it's me newbie know nothing! I took your advice and changed the carrier seal, below the water pump, put the drive back together, did a pressure test and it still leaked out of the prop drive. Should I reseal the bearing carrier in the prop shaft? I don't know what to do now. Help...

    Trying to do a pressure test on alpha 1, Gen2 it leaks

    This is my first time to do a pressure test on my drive unit as a dumb newbie. Oh yes my unit is a 96, not a 97. I can get the pressure to go to 15 psi, but is leaks off in about 5 mins. I can hear the air coming out of the exhaust at the prop. Can anybody help me? What did I do wrong...
