I have a 87 ebbtide with a 4.3L. The engine runs great from 1200 rpm up to WOT. Below 1200 rpm it doesnt idle well at all and below 1000 will die. At idle its puffing black smoke. Plugs,wires,cap were replaced last year. I'm assuming my mixture screws need to be adjusted?

I pulled my Alpha 1 out drive off to grease u joints and check gimbal bearing to find a fair amount of gear lube in the drive bellows... I'm going to assume the shaft seal in the upper gear case has failed. Or where might it be coming from?
