1979 merc 9.8 fuel dripping from carb

Since this motor is new to me, I'm trying to iron out all of the kinks. Today I noticed that every now and then a drop of fuel would drip from the throttle shaft where it sticks out the bottom of the carb where the spring is attached. First I thought it was leaking from the bowl at the gasket. I...

Looking for timing tips on 1979 9.8hp

I want to check my timing on my motor. The manual says it needs to be running between 4500 and 5500 rpms when the advance timing mark on the flywheel should line up with the mark on the starter housing. This brings me to three questions, Where is the timing mark on the starter housing? Since I...

1979 9.8 cutting out at full throttle

I purchased the motor in the winter. I rebuilt the carb and changed the impeller. Engine runs great. But sometimes at full throttle the engine keeps cutting in and out. It doesn't stall though. I'm thinking it could be a wiring problem with the ignition. But I'm not quite sure. Any information...

    1979 Merc 9.8 fuel leaking

My engine runs great. Primes fine with no fuel leaking. Then when I tilt the engine up, the remaining fuel in the bowl of the carb leaks out. Is this normal for these engines?

    1979 9.8 carb question

I'm currently rebuilding the carb for my 1979 Merc 9.8. There is a black rubber "O" ring about a 1/4" in diameter in the parts container. I don't remember seeing one come out of the carb. Anyone have any ideas where it may go? Can't find anything about it in my shop manual. Maybe it came from...

    1985 Merc 9.8 tach hookup

I'm looking to check timing on My 1985 9.8 Mercury. The manual tells me to hook up a tach. Just wondering what type of tach and how to hook it up. Can I use an automotive timing light with built in Tach? If so how do I hook it up? Any help is greatly appreciated.
