Took the lower unit on my 1980 Evinrude 35 hp apart to check for wear. Replaced the O-rings. Now just to be careful I will be checking often for water in the lube. My question is this. How long will the water make the lube look milky before it separates?

It was suggested that the lower unit on my 1980 35 hp was low on lube causing it to turn black in a few hours. That may be but I decided to check the bearings anyway, I have the OMC manual and calls for a special tool to re-install the indent ball bearings. Is it possible to do this without...
I was checking for water and found that the gear lube in my 1980 Evinrude 35 hp was completely black after less than 20 hrs. I've had the motor since new and have never seen this before. To bad at the time I was still tired from a 700 mile drive because I never thought to check the lube for...
My boat trailer has slipper springs. The rubber spring bushings are starting to show their age. I did some searching and found nothing. Where can someone get them?

I made a modified bypass cover for my 4 hp so I bought longer SS screws. Now I was told that SS and aluminum are not compatible. I don't want to use standard steel screws because of rust so would brass be OK?

A number of years ago I saw something that replaced the standard cap on a gas can (just a plain gas can) so that the can could be used as an outboard motor supply. Does anyone know if they are still sold?

With all the horror stories about motors overheating due to whatever reason, I was wondering if someone sells an after market temperature alarm for motors that never came with one. Maybe something that also tells the temperature so I can set the alarm to go off if the temperature goes above...
Just finished rebuilding my 1974 4 hp. I noticed that the water jacket runs under one edge of the exhaust cover. Is there any reason to think that I'll starve the engine of water if I were to install a tell tale there? What I mean is, assuming a good water pump, does the water pump in these...
Last fall before the water got hard here in Wisconsin I hit something even harder with my 35 hp motor, a rock. I thought I was clear of a reef and was just starting to pick up speed, the boat was just starting to lift, when I hit a rock with the prop stopping the motor dead. Here are my...
The photos show the reed valve assembly, the gasket, and the intake side of the crankcase of my 1974 4 hp. You see the hole in the center of the reed plate and the gasket. It leads to the pocket marked with an X on the crankcase half. That pocket leads nowhere. Anyone have any idea of what...
My 1974 4 hp threw a rod last, year putting a hole a little smaller than a dime in the crankcase wall. Here's what I'm planning on doing. I shaped a piece of 0.030 brass to cover the hole. After I clean and sandblast the crankcase I plan to glue the brass patch to the crankcase with J B Weld...
I did a search and found this. "3M 847 is good for the spaghetti seal on crankcase halves on vintage outboards?" It may be obvious but are they talking about what goes on the flat mating surfaces of the crank case halves of the 1974 4 hp I'm rebuilding?

I have a 1970 and a 1974 Evinrude 4 hp power head. Both power heads have bad cranks and the 1974 threw a rod putting a hole in the carb side block half. Not surprised at the 70 as it has many many hard hours on it. Have know idea why the 74 blew a rod because the motor has very few hours on...
I have a 1970 Evinrude 4 hp that shuts down after running for a while, maybe 5 to 10 minutes, at full throttle. It acts like the throttle is, over maybe a 5 second period, being turned down until it just stops. Squeezing the bulb while it's doing this does not help and I run my 35 hp from the...
