Hand sand. Self etching primer and rattle can. Several coats. Light sanding in between coats. Did mine years ago. New decals are available to.

There are plenty of videos out there describing the job. You can do it if you do your research. Replacing the entire rub rail and mounting system can be done. As Chris said heat gun or soaking the rubber in hot water before installing will help greatly. Good luck. Keep us posted.
Replacing the seals on my power steering control valve. I noticed the ball stud is held stationary by the long steering tube. It is a bit scratched. I was able to clean it up an polish it with Emory paper and fine sandpaper. It moves when assembled but it’s a bit tight. Does this ball stud need...
Agree with capri…. 2 coats. Depending on type of wood you are using it’s gonna soak in pretty good. I did light sanding and acetone in between coats.
I coated all wood when doing my seat rebuilding. I wanted to be sure the wood would last underneath the seat cushions.
