OK, thanks. Sounds like that's what I must do.

    Distributor points cam

The tune up kit I just bought for my 1984 Tempest has no lubrication pad included to oil the distributor cam, or any way to fit one, should I be concerned?

    Fuel pump problem

Scott, turns out you were on the money regarding the pickup tube. I had not looked at it when I removed the gas tank, but remembered it being welded around the base, not realising it could be unscrewed from the top of the mounting tube. Anyway, it was a plastic pipe pushed onto the fitting, and...

    Fuel pump problem

The pickup tube is welded onto the tank, so could not really examine it, but I can blow through the fuel line and hear it bubbling in the tank. I'm going to hook up a line from a gas can to the pump, over a short distance just to confirm the pump is working. If it is, I will have to consider the...

    Fuel pump problem

New fuel pump arrived today, but still can't get it to pump fuel from the gas tank. To recap, I have had the gas tank off to check for varnish, but found it to be pretty clean, washed it out anyway. New anti siphon valve, new fuel line, and now, new fuel pump. I spun the engine over for what...

    Question on stern drive re-installation

1984 3L stringer I'm getting close to putting the sterndrive back on. In the factory manual, it recommends marking the ball gears during removal, I guess they want the balls mated up during re- installation in the same relativity they were separated. My problem is that I got this boat with the...

    Help needed on OMC stringer

Yes, that's what I did in the end. The book advises removing the ball gear shaft so that you can access the pump unit from the bottom to tap it out, but really, it wasn't necessary just to remove the impeller and housing.

    Help needed on OMC stringer

I've got the original OMC factory manual, courtesy of Ebay. anyone got any idea why the ball gear shaft will not come out?

    Help needed on OMC stringer

Manual suggests removing ball gear shaft to assist in removal of water pump, but I was completely unable to withdraw it. In fact it seems firmly held in place by something, and nothing I could do would budge it. I eventually managed to remove the pump with a little heat, and two steel rods...

    Help needed on OMC stringer

OK now it all makes some sense. I had thought Bondo was referring to the propeller. I think that will explain why it won't turn anti clock, and now, just to be sure, I will do the work on the water pump suggested by Scott. Thanks to all.

    Help needed on OMC stringer

I know this is a good idea, but it might have to wait. I'm working hard to get this boat in the water before winter sets in so I can identify any other problems, that will give me all winter to deal with them. Does anyone have an answer to my upper gearbox question?

    Help needed on OMC stringer

No, I haven't put the prop on yet, or installed the drive. I don't want to do that until I can confirm that the ball gear on the upper gearbox is supposed to turn only clockwise by hand, if I try to turn it anti clock, it is too stiff, and I don't want to force it. I want to be sure there is no...

    Help needed on OMC stringer

My boat came to me with a seized lower end, and disassembled. I have repaired the lower end and am in process of re-assembling, but have a question about the upper gearbox. The ball gear turns easily by hand in a clockwise direction, but seems too tight to turn by hand anti-clockwise. Is this...

    Fuel pump problem

I installed a new anti siphon valve hoping it would help prime the fuel line, but no difference. Removed pump again for a closer inspection and realised that although it is working to some extent, just not enough to do the job. Bullet is bitten, I have ordered a new one. On a different note...
