Took my carb apart to check things out. Rebuilt it last Fall. In the accelerator pump there is a small bb under the screen. I have heard that is is not required and may improve performance of the pump if left out. Is this ture?

Can this be changed without pulling the motor? It seems like I can get a socket on each nut and drop it enough in the bilge to get new gasket on but it also looks like it might be locked in by the rear motor housing. I have a leak but I don't have the means to pull the whole motor. Thanks.
A friend of mine has a Merc 3.0, alpha 1. Just found out #4 has 0 compression via a leak down test. Mech gave him a quote of $1600 to repair. Sounds way high to me. Any insight?

Over the past 4-5 weeks and with all your guys help, I have brought back to life a 1985 Merc 3.0 140. Running sweet this past Sat. hitting 40mph pulling a tube and with 3 other people on board. After going balls to the wall for 40 mins sputtered and died. Couldn't start it back up enough to run...

I bought a 1985 Chris Craft a few weeks ago and it was not running good at all and stalled with a load. I fixed it to where it got to around 3000rpm and 29-31mph but no more...
I replaced the push rod cover gasket and noticed that 2 bearings were lifted. Would this effect engine performance? I have been trying to pin point why I have coughing / sputtering problems.
How hard to change out yourself? I have read you have to lift motor to get enough clearance. I have a leak behind my timing gear. Pretty steady drip when running. I am guessing it is the oil pan gasket. Could it be something else?
