Ok, got it dropped. The flywheel is not moving. The starter gear is clear of the ring gear. It's in neutral but I assume that doesnt matter with the lower unit off. I'm going to soak the pour some kroil through the plug holes and I'll report back in a week or so. Thanks for the help.
Hi, I just acquired this motor. Paid $100. From a co-workers husband. He said he didn't know too much about it. It looks like someone was monkeying with it. The bolts are missing to the lower end. I put a boroscope in the plug hole and it looks like its seized.
My questions are:
Where do I get...
I have about 0.040 between the exhaust housing cover and the gearcase (resting to lifting housing). Its supposed to be around 0.010. The manual (seloc pdf) says the shims are supposed to be placed under the ex. housing cover. When I bought the shims the parts diagram at the marine shop showed...
I'm replacing the bearings and shafts (upper vertical and water pump) in the upper gearcase due to water damage. I'm new to OMC and don't know the options available to me. I've been looking for the above parts and there seems to be quite a large price discrepancy between OEM and aftermarket...
Pretty much stated my question in the title. I have a 1978 boat with everything original except the lower until and exhaust housing. The lower unit has the small zink next to the impeller intake holes. I'm having some issues with the upper gear house and am wondering about purchasing a 1981 - 85...
I need to replace the bearings on the shaft inside the bearing housing (upper gear-case). I'm also looking for a new bearing housing as it is seriously deteriorated. The gearcase was full of water :( . Since a jig is required to get the proper shim spacing I'm thinking its time to find a pro...
I drained the upper gearcase last night and found mostly water in there. Where is it likely that water would enter? I was looking at the manual and it looks like the water pump pumps the water up to the upper gearcase and then out the sides where there are diagonal passages connecting to the...
I'm going to be doing some maintenance on my OMC 800 stringer (full mech) and am wondering what oil to use. I need 80w90 in the intermediate, upper, and lower. I am wondering what is the difference between automotive gear lube
(80w90) and marine lube (80w90).
(I am going to get marine grade...
Hi all,
I'm new to this forum.
After working on my boat yesterday, I was so blue that I could hardly sleep last night.
I have a 1978 Seaswirl with a 185 OMC (GM305) 800 sterndrive. It was running fine although I noticed the starter was labouring. I was doing a tune up and after replacing the...
