    OMC 800 won't shift under load

    Had a bad shift cable, replaced it. Checked cable from console to engine, OK. Did center out-of-gear procedure on shift converter box, OK. Put muffs on, ran engine, shifted gears perfectly. Put prop in water, won't shift, chatters, will not go into gear. I'm guessing stripped gears or something...

    shifting changed

    1978 OMC800 stringer. Pulled the outdrive to rebuild the waterpump. After replacing the outdrive the shift points have moved so far from the center position on the converter box that the engine begins to build rpm's before the forward gear engages. If I try to put it in reverse it chatters...
