    Motor selection

You really got to get the boat model and specs. Even if we knew the length and width and stern height, there are still other variables, like tube diameter, weight capacity and weight of the boat itself. My Newport is 12'6" long and 4' wide. It has the largest size tubes available in a small...

    Fog

It's called dead reckoning. And it's how we all used to navigate before Loran and GPS. About 50 years ago my cousin had a boat on Cape Cod Bay and we used to go around the Cape cross the bay to Boston and/or go thru the canal, always dodging lobster pots. When the fog and rain rolled in he would...

    Newport Vessels Opinions

4 stroke motors Yes, 4 strokes are far more complex and have more parts, and they don't produce power on each piston stroke. But I also think the problem is that its hard to engineer and control cost if each HP level were designed specifically with marginally smaller displacements and less...

Pull start only engaged only when I pull fast

I had a 8HP Chrysler. It had a manual starter pinion gear that popped up when the rope was pulled out. When it needed grease, it would not engage the flywheel unless I pulled the cord rapidly out for an inch or two. It needed to be greased once a year.

Considering Sea Hunt Escape 186 LE

Its been 16 years since we bought our 18 foot Sea Hunt with a 150 Vmax 2 stroke Yamaha. Boat and motor are still going strong. Without a doubt this is the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. We now have over 800 hours. If I was buying this boat today it would have a four stroke fuel injected...

    Newport Vessels Opinions

So I bought the Newport Dana 8.5 foot boat. We liked it, but it was two small and my 20 year old 2 stroke 9.9 Mercury had trouble getting it to plane. So I sold the Dana after one season and bought the Catalina, which is 12.5 feet long. I also bought a 2024 Tohatsu 9.8 with fuel injection, a...

Adding Glue On Fish Pole Holders

Isn't this is an inflatable and RIB thread or is it not? Even I know that glue is the ONLY way to put rod holders, oarlocks, sterns, anything on a Rib/Sib. I found the answer to my question on another RIB/SIB forum. Weaver's

What would cause my FSK16 to not be propelled by my Johnson JW10 3hp?

you need to get a owner's manual or service manual for your new hobby motor. These little things can last forever and can be a lot of fun. But you need to know a few things, like what spark to use, what fuel/oil mix to use, what fuel filter to use, what gas tank it uses, how to get parts. Learn...

Adding Glue On Fish Pole Holders

I bought a pair of glue on fishing pole holders for my PVC boat. I am not sure about which glue to use. I am second guessing my initial idea just to use the same glue that came with the boat's patch repair kit. Does anyone have experience with doing this on a PVC boat?

    Long shaft for dinghy

Yeah, that was a day of frustration that I'll never get back again! ;-)

    Looking for solid floor inflatable

There seems to be some consensus on the Ribnet site that PVC boats made in the last 10 years will last longer than they used to. Call me skeptical, but still, for the money I could buy a couple PVCs for the price.... So, I think I will drop $1,200 on the Newport Vessels Dana with a wood floor...

    Long shaft for dinghy

I have a couple of aluminum row-boats that are rated for up to 15 hp and are 15 inch transoms. Years ago I tried to put a 10 hp with a 20 inch shaft on one of them. It resulted in huge spray in all directions, especially back-splash inside the boat and it lowered top speed noticeably. I tried...

Intex Mariner 4 modifications and Tips

BEWARE: Those things are god-awful noisy and short lived. A guy down the lake from me had one on his dinghy for a couple of years. It was a community joke. It could be heard over a strong wind, with surf crashing on the beach, from 5 miles away, even when a strong wind was blowing towards him...

    Newport Vessels Opinions

No kidding. I did not ask about the quality of Amazon reviews. Frankly your response is perhaps the least helpful response to any forum post I've made in 20+ years of posting on various internet forums or any e-mail list-serves. You have reminded me of why I have hardly used iboats for years...

    Newport Vessels Opinions

I am looking at a Newport Vessels Dana which is an 8.5 foot boat that is rated up to 10 HP, so I could use my 9.9 2 stroke Merc motor. It's $1000, free shipping. I've not found much about them, but they also sell lots of electric motors which seem to get good reviews on Amazon. I am looking at...
