Thought I'd not only follow up on this post, but admit to my mistake.
Just because you can see coolant in the recovery tank, doesn't mean you actually have enough coolant!!
I feel like such a noob... :(
Added a coolant/water mix until I could see some in the reservoir tank. Started her back...
I'm going to give it a driveway test within the next couple hours and just monitor it carefully and be ready to kill it if things start to get too hot.
I'm about ready to throw this boat in the trash, so I'm not too worried about hurting it much. It's just been a giant paper weight since I got...
1st thing I just did was pull the front cap on my heat exchanger. This was all in the one section where the cold water enters. Before I dig into the exhaust elbow, would this seem like the cause of my issue?
Old impeller pieces.
Yes, the old impeller was in dozens of pieces when I changed it out.
Is there a way to check if my head gasket is blown without tearing it all apart?
I'll look into the exhaust elbow* today and inspect it.
I successfully got my 470 running after a couple years of tinkering around with carb and ignition issues. I put a brand new thermostat in it last season, since I new I had the time and it's a cheap part.
There's water coming out of my sterndrive while the muffs are on, so I'm quite confident...
So, I successfully switched over to the pertronix ignitor and coil.
She fires right up now. Sounds smoother and noticeably better.
Now.. I have a new issue - overheating
This will be on a new thread.
Thanks everyone!
I'm curious about this.. however, just to clarify,
Your pictures are showing how the 3.0 is different from the 3.7,,
and how that 3.0 dizzy wouldn't work with my 3.7, correct??
Saying this since I've had mixed feedback that these electronic dizzys both exist and don't exist. I see how the 3.0...
I'm having a lot of trouble finding an electronic distributor that will fit my 3.7L 4cyn., let alone any in the price range of 120-150.
Help would be more appreciated than you know. TIA!
I'm thinking of giving this a try. I finally found the cause of my problems to be with timing. It jumps around at an idle, even with the dist. tight. Inspected the mechanical advance mechanisms and there was no wear or slop on any of the components.
Would you (or anyone) happen to know which...
The fuel is 5 months old, and had stabilizer in it. After inspecting my fuel line pickup at the tank, the line is clean with no rot. Still looks brand new inside. I also have no anti-siphon valve. It goes from the 90 on the tank, to a strait barb with no internal workings.
The fuel filter is...
Was already thinking of replacing the fuel line and anti-siphon since i'll have the floor board up right after my last post haha, so it's on the shopping list.
The boat did run at WOT when I first bought it 3 years ago. I only had it on the water 3 times before winterizing. During the few times...
I don't disagree that the compression is low, as stated, but I feel this is unrelated and insignificant for checking fuel delivery, and ruling specifically fuel delivery, out of the equation.
Asking Google "What should compression be for merc 470" gives:

For a Mercruiser 470 engine, a good rule of thumb is that each cylinder should have compression of 130 PSI or higher. While the specific range can vary slightly depending on the engine's condition and age, a...
