When my 67' Big Twin 40 is idling, exhaust smoke comes up in to the engine compartment under the cover. The engine runs fine other than that. How can that be redirected to the proper exit channel?

I have 1969 Lund runabout with a 1967 Evinrude 40 hp 40752E outboard. The gearcase is cracked. Evidently it had a couple of weld repairs already so it needs to be replaced. It is tough to find this gearcase. Does anyone know if a gearcase from any other year or model Evinrude fit this motor?
