convince me to get or not get an I/O over an outboard.

Only boat I've owned was an outboard deck boat (15 years). Sold it a few years ago and looking to get a newer deck boat. Looking at used 4 stroke deck boats like Hurricane. Problem is there are not very many of them for sale in the Houston area. Seems most boats are I/O. I'll be doing all...

    Pontoon regrets?

We currently have an old 16ft deck boat and are looking to replace it with something newer, nicer, and larger. We are considering deckboats, open bows, and pontoons. We mainly like to cruise or just float, but also like to do a little bit of tubing and skiing. Anyone have any regrets going to...

No high speed for first few minutes

1979 Evinrude 115. Rebuilt the motor last year, has about 100 hours on it. The last few weekends I have taken the boat out it will not run full speed for the first few minutes. This is only the first few minutes on the first day. Once the high speed jets kick in it runs great for the rest of the...

    some observations...

I've noticed every time someone asks "can I tow this boat with this car" people always chime in about needing a truck, not a car. The reasons are varied, but none make any sense. Some common things said are: 1. The car is not heavy enough to stop the boat/trailer in an emergency. Really? So a...

Why double the oil for break in but not synthetic?

Why during break in of a rebuilt motor can you not use synthetic oil in fear of too much lubrication not seating the rings properly...but it is recommended to use double the regular oil for extra lubrication. Or am I missing something?

How do you determine what size prop you have when there are no markings? Is it the total diameter of the fins?

    Odd temp horn issue

1979 115hp Evinrude. The previous owner had disconnected the temp horn at the controls...noticed this when installing a new console. Hooked it up and got the following: Started motor and the horn buzzes immediately and stays on. Killed motor and put key in on position and grounded wires leading...

    Rebuilt motor will not start

1979 115 evinrude. I've rebuilt one hole and new rings on the others. Compression is 90 on all 4. Motor will not start. Fuel gets to the carbs and the bowls fill up, but no fuel gets to the spark plugs. Good spark on all 4. I also rebuilt the carbs with all new parts, and made sure jets were...

    Gel Seal question

Do I apply a thin coat to the entire surface of both halves of the crankcase? The manual is somewhat vague. Also, the manual says to stay 1/4 inch away from the labyrinth seals...what are they?

1979 115 hp evinrude rebuild help

I took my 1979 115 hp motor apart close to 2 years ago due to losing a ring/piston due to coking. I ordered various parts and due to having 2 kids under the age of 3 have not had time to attempt the rebuild. I will have time over the memorial weekend so I can use all the advice I can get. Here...
