I know it is a common problem with the plastic float bowls on the mid 80's V4 motors. Has anyone been successful in sanding them on a flat plate to resolve the issue with sealing?

I have a 1987 J 90hp, it has TnT, and the 35 amp regulator/rectifier (P/N 395391) on it.
I have tested the unit, it is bad.
I have a 1990 J 90hp parts motor, with a 10 amp regulator/rectifier (P/N 583529) on it.
Can i just replace the bad 35 amp unit with this 10 amp replacement?

I have a 1987 Johnson 90hp, it uses the 35 amp, water cooled regulator/rectifier. Using the test outlined by Joe Reeves (man is that guy knowledgeable) that the Reg/Rect is bad (erratic tach, no output at battery)
My question is on compatibility between years/part numbers.
