    Mercury ID help

    I'm a transfer over from the Evinrude forums. I need help with id for a Merc. Serial # 5342549 6hp has 60 on the rear housing. I've searched the forum but things do not add up. The hood style is like a 1990's. The serial number (as for as I can tell) does not even come up unless its a 1968? Thanks

    evinrude 9.9-15hp gasket 1974-1976

    pulled lower end off last nite to clean out water passage along with new thermostat--should there be a gasket between the mating surfaces of lower end and upper housing?
