‘85 Chris Craft Scorpion transom, stringers, bulkheads and upholstery

Thanks for the info guys. Thought I’d post about my progress so far. Done a bunch of drilling for core samples and found lots of good solid wood. Looks like I’m replacing transom, engine mounts, and two bulkheads. Stringers are in good shape all the way down except for a very small are at the...

‘85 Chris Craft Scorpion transom, stringers, bulkheads and upholstery

Jumping in head first into a world unknown, any and all guidance along the way will be very much appreciated. I’m pulling the engine Saturday. After getting all the mechanical stuff out and a thorough scrub down, I’d like to get busy on a sturdy cradle. Definitely need some advice on this... I...

Replacing bulkheads and deck on 85 Chris craft

Haha. Thats quite an optimistic turn from your first response. Still, I’m no longer in denial. I will drill into the transom tonight, but I really do think you were right about gutting the whole thing. May as well if I’m building a cradle and separating the cap from the hull. Also am not...

Replacing bulkheads and deck on 85 Chris craft

Yes sir... you are absolutely right... DENIAL Got the gas tank out. Started tapping around with a hammer and looking around the boat more thoroughly. Stringers are pretty solid, but definitely have rot lower in the transom, which I’m sure would have made it to the back end of the stringers...

Replacing bulkheads and deck on 85 Chris craft

Hey all. I’ve already ordered a ton of money in upholstery supplies and a sewing machine (giving it a try myself) when I decided to cut my floor out because I thought I had soft spots. Turned out the floor was solid as can be. I was just feeling seams when I thought I had soft spots. The only...

Correct ventilation in engine compartment of runabout

Going to give it a shot myself. Have a pretty beefy all metal vintage grandma sewing machine. Been planning for years and studying with how to videos from sailrite.com. My only sewing experience is making a pair of boxers in home ec. in middle school 30 years ago, so we’ll see how it goes...

Correct ventilation in engine compartment of runabout

Not for sound deadening, just going for a sleeker more modern layout. And just like Rick said, yes my gunwale storage compartments definitely pass air through into the engine bay. Have had to fish things out of the engine bay on occasion when I find I’m missing something. Thanks to all for the...

Correct ventilation in engine compartment of runabout

So are you saying that it would be ok to close of these openings with upholstery? (Assuming I have correct ventilation set up just using the bilge vents)

Correct ventilation in engine compartment of runabout

I am planning to re-upholster my 1985 21’ Chris Craft bowrider this winter. (350 I/O Mercruiser) I’d like to build wrap around seating on one side and a solid upholstered side panel on the other side (instead of the open storage areas that are there now). As is, there is lots of added airflow...

1985 Mercruiser 260 knocking sound and idles high after running on plane for a while

Thanks to everyone for your help with my last issue with shifting. The boat shifts perfectly now. :-) I have two more problems I wanted to ask about. 1) I have a little bit of a knocking sound coming from my valve covers. The sound seems to happen in a regular pattern, and every time it...

    1985 Mercruiser 260 w/ alpha 1 trouble shifting

First time poster, and desperately needing help. I bought a 1985 Chris Craft Scorpion with a Mercruiser 260 and alpha 1 drive. It's got a few problems but my big problem is shifting. I replaced the shift plate assembly with the new style switch. Adjusted the cables to specs and checked both...
