Engine:
1976 135 HP V4 Evinrude
problem:
i repowered a boat with this engine. After going out, i discovered the engine had a counter rotating gearset. I believe the way the throttle lever works, one would never get full throttle in forward gear with this configuration. I bought a counter...
through trial and error, and a lot of going in circles in reverse providing quite a lot of entertainment for passer by's i've determined the gearcase on my apparently 1978 140 crossflow is counter rotating. Meaning if i put a common Right hand prop, if i try to shift into forward, it goes...
Hello,
I swapped a lower unit and found i only had reverse. After taking the lower unit off the boat, i found the shift rod was not threaded all the way down. I believe this would be the direction favorable to forward gear (correct me if i'm wrong).
What direction is the top of the shift rod...
If one has all of the pullers, tools (pullers, presses), and parts, how hard is it to really rebuilt a lower unit?
What would you say is the biggest thing to watch out for? Is there a easy to use tool one can make to pressure test after seals are installed?
For some reason i get the...
After repowering my boat with a new motor I finally took it out on the water today. Fail! When going into forward all i could get is reverse.
I disconnected the shift cables in the water and tried to manually shift through gears but again no luck.
I'm worried that a week before i was out...
i'm trying to do a water pump / removal of the gearcase on a 1976 powerhead on top of a 1978 mid/lower.
Am i supposed to take out the third bolt / whole linkage to let the shift rod down?!?!
It's way in there and will be a mess to try and get back on.
It's hard to believe they'd...
I'm in the home stretch replacing an '85 looper (blown) with a '76 crossflow. I got the thing running, new thottle and shift cables adjusted now i just need to get the trim working.
TRIM:
i know the old uses a 3 wire system, the new uses a 2. Its actually easier for me in terms of $ and...
Mine flat out corroded or broke off at the top. I can see a stub where it used to be looking down from an angle.
how involved is replacing it?
(this part, the head broke off)
What it should look like:
What mine looks like:
This boat is nothing but trouble!
Hello,
I blew a 86 looper last season . Repowering the boat with essentially a 76' Crossflow.
Problem:
Cables changed in 79' and i don't have the controls that came with the motor.
The motor needs the old style connector for shift/throttle; the controls need the new.
Is there a way...
I bought an engine off a guy (crossflow setup). The motor has a '76 135 powerhead on a '78 Mid/Lower.
I got everything running but trying to troubleshoot if the front gears are junk. I've adjusted the shift cable all the way forward and all the way back then tried to turn the prop. When in...
Hello,
For some reason my neutral safety switch isn't working. if i connect the two spade pins to the switch mounted on the controls, the engine won't turn over. If i disconnect the two and jumper them together, things work fine.
Question:
How do i remove the controls?
Is the switch a...
Hi,
I replaced the motor on an older boat. The power tilt/trim was in unknown conditions. Turns out the motor was guarantted bad (had screw driver size hole in the housing).
I replaced the motor and now it looks like something is wrong with the center tilt cylinder...
I'm trying to remove the power tilt and trim the same way this guy does:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYpsePzyE4M
mine is a 1978 crossflow (140).
however both the motor on the port, and fluid reservoir on the starboard is HUGE. I cannot see how this was ever placed in unless it was...
Hello,
I have a worn out motor on a 1978 140 hp crossflow, i also have a 1986 140 looper.
Are the tilt/trim assembly's interchangable? They kind of look like it at first glance.
Thanks,
Hi,
I bought a motor that i thought was a 1978 but turns out the powerhead is off about a 1976. The back buldge has no outlet port to the pisser. I guess around this year they just let the water out the exhaust and had no visual check for cooling flow.
A marine mechanic told me this is an...
