Power Trim Tilt 1996 Johnson 50 hp

No joy . I think it's beyond my ability to repair it. Now I'll check out my engine to see if it's worth spending money on it-otherwise change my engine.

Power Trim Tilt 1996 Johnson 50 hp

Thanks Racerone. Topped up oil. Manual release valve fully closed. Bench tested-good movement up and down. Will try on boat again tomorrow, will it raise the engine/ maintain it in the up position. If not, I'll take it apart and see if any bits are missing or damaged.

Power Trim Tilt 1996 Johnson 50 hp

I've tried to install a pre-owned PTT(04381350) onto my 1996 Johnson 50hp 2-stroke. Thought I was getting there, working O.K. on the bench, but won't raise the engine when on the boat. I have decided to either buy another unit, or look for a rebuild service in the U.K. Anybody know engineers who...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

Success! Read on this forum about lapping the crankshaft and flywheel. So I removed the flywheel, cleaned the surface of the ring magnet, took out the key, lapped the flywheel/crankshaft, replaced the key, then replaced the flywheel. This now sits about 2mm lower on the crankshaft. Result...

    Timing too advanced, Johnson 50hp 2-stroke 1996

Looked at CDI troubleshooting guide, back to the boat with some ideas.

    Timing too advanced, Johnson 50hp 2-stroke 1996

This is a duplicated post from my previous thread. Summary; Johnson BJ50 BELEDS, difficulty in rotating the flywheel using a usual starting procedure. Advised to check my ignition timing and check the Woodruff key. Results of these checks; Woodruff key present and intact. Ring magnet surface was...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

Hello again. Been back top do some things advised in your replies. Flywheel off, checked for Woodruff key, it's in place and looks good. The ring magnet showed surface rust, so I lightly sanded it, a bit cleaner. Tested the ignition timing. It is well advanced. But, here's the odd thing...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

Thanks everybody. I arrived back from holiday, went to the boat with a better understanding of voltage drop testing. I have found a voltage drop of 1.5 V from the engine's ground back to the -ve battery post. My first job is to sort this out with new cable and connectors. More testing to follow.

Also, I must go back to check all the terminology, (terminal labels) on solenoids, I think I have got badly confused.

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

I'll recheck things when I can, including voltage drops on starter circuitry, and ignition timing.

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

I'll update you, although I've unwittingly left some things unanswered. Bench test on starter proves it is spinning, and a voltage drop here is about 1V. At the boat, the boat will crank (starter motor turns, engages flywheel, flywheel rotates) from the ignition switch when the key is turned to...

Thanks for your replies. I'll be back at the boat to do your advised tests a bit later.

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

Before doing other things, I want to check the current draw when powering up the starter motor on the bench. I'm taking delivery of a clamp on ammeter tomorrow. Chris 1956 suggests the current draw should be less than 200 Amps. Does that value sound right for a bench test? I can post my findings...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

Thanks. It cranks when the spark is off (I wouldn't say well). Voltage drops about 3.5V. Cannot crank when circuit is set to spark. I'd like to test the spark timing, can I do this without cranking using the starter motor. Is it time to do electrical tests on the wiring, from ignition switch to...
