I just got a boat with an old merc inline 4. The model is 400E (40HP)? The serial is 13096XX.
Is there a chart where I can look up the year on this?
Thanks!
Silly question I guess:
I have a 15' tri hull with 20" transom. I removed the outboard and sealed up the holes.
I'm wondering if I could put a 9.9HP short shaft on the back and be ok for putting around since it obviously won't plane?
What kind of speeds do you think I might get? I'm just...
I have seen kits at Walmart pretty cheap for converting from R12 to R134a. I was surfing eBay today and saw a new product called Freeze 12. It looks like a better alternative.
Has anyone here converted to either or have any knowledge of Freeze 12?
I have a 1986 Suburban with 350 and factory Rochester 4-barrell that was recently rebuilt by the previous owner.
The truck runs and drives great but starting it is a major PITA.
You have to either pour a little gas in the carb, which makes it fire right up, or pump it vigorously 20 or more...
I remember a post from a year ago that was titled ' What you can do with a 14' boat ' or something similar. It was a guy in the UK the did a total resoration including the trailer.
He had a 6 gallon portable gas tank under each back to back seat and had fitted fuel senders to them.
He put a...
My 1959 fat fifty sure would look good on the back . . . . with a nice fresh coat of paint . . . .

Wife would kill me !!
I'm looking for the quick connect fuel fitting that is attached to the outboard. It is a two prong metal fitting - standard for OMC in the 70's.
Any web sites out there where I could price this out?
Thanks,
James
I was just at the dealer inquiring about gear lube for three motors I have. 1959 Johnson 50HP V4, 1973 Johnson 115HP V-4, and 1975 Mercury 1500 L6. He said I could use the same lube in all three units. He also said that I could use any 80W-90 gear oil(lube?).
Is this true? Non of the units...
I'm trying to adapt a 1964 Johnson trailer from an oddball gullwing boat to a smaller tri-hull.
I took the bunks off the old tri-hull trailer and was planning on using them but the new trailer doesn't have any frame rails in the right locations.
I had a set of rollers, so I mounted them on...
I want to fill some holes in this transom, but I will probably be redoing the transom in a year.
Would 4200 pushed into the holes be adequite for a year or less? I also have marine tex but didn't want to waste it on this.
Another option would be a dowel sealed in with 4200.
I would probably...
I'm working on getting this motor going. The previous owner said it would idle rough, and fuel was spitting out the sides of the pump(see other thread).
Upon further inspection I have found that the intake manifold and one of the heads have been replaced with newer parts. The newer parts are...
I have read that a trailer with bunks is better than rollers for doing structural work on a boat.
Is this just true of using the trailer as a platform, or do most experienced boat owners prefer bunks over rollers for launching and storage etc.
What are some of the downsides of each?
