When I took off the water pump body assembly I noticed that the top where the drive shaft went through the assembly that it had a lot of hard plastic in it like it got hot and melted. Should this area be clean or have a seal in it? or is this normal?

I'm trying to remove the sight bowl to clean the fuel filter. I have the manual for the motor and it says to pull straight down and not to twist or **** the sight bowl.
Is there a trick to pulling off the sight bowl - I've tried several times and no luck.

I own a 14 foot aluminum fishing boat and a 7.5 HP Johnson Seahorse outboard motor. In the 15 years that I owned the two, I have only been able to plane out the boat 1 or 2 times.
Would a hydrofoil help it plane out? If so what type?:)
