Valve timing on 8hp 4-stroke

What point do I line up on the flywheel of a T-8 to set the belt position? The cam pulley has the arrows, so I lined #1 up with the arrow on the block, but I cant find an indicator on the flywheel. It's the flywheel with the teeth for electric start, if that makes a difference. Thanks, Eric

Hynautic H51 helm and Seastar HC5358 cylinder

I'm currently building a boat with twin 2003 4-stroke 70hp Johnsons and decided to go with hydraulic steering. I bought a HC5358 cylinder and the tie bar kit, which is what Teleflex recommends for my engines, and got a Hynautic H51 helm off ebay. Only when I recieved the helm did I discover...

    TnT pump wiring diagram

I got a bunch of the old style Merc TnT pumps given to me, but they're all missing most of the wiring and just have the motor, pump and solonoid. Does anyone know where to find a diagram to wire these things back up? I've tested all the motors and most of them work and spray oil :D .<br...

    Water in exhaust

I fired up my 1975 50hp Merc for the first time of the season today. Usually there's a little water spraying out of the upper exhaust hole, but today there was a lot more than usual. Is this alright or is my exhaust gasket leaking?
http://media.putfile.com/Water-In-Exhaust
<br...

Is there a way to Service a 3cyl Merc trigger

I've figured out that the lack of spark in my '73 650 is caused by a bad trigger. How do the triggers work? Is it magnetic?
I know the books all say to replace a defective trigger, but they're hundreds of dollars from the dealer. Has anyone successfully repaired/rebuilt one? I've got...

    No Spark- 1973 Merc 650 3cyl

I bought this cheap motor with no spark and have been trying to determine the cause for a couple days. When I bought it there was cracked coil, so I replaced the coil with one from another 65 in my yard. I've checked all the wiring and rewired it entirely twice now. Is there a way to test the...

Swapping parts from '72 Merc 500 to '68 Merc 650

I have a 1968 Merc 650 with a broken rotor and stuck rings on #2 piston. I was looking at this motor and a blown '72 Merc 500 and started wondering if the new style distributor would swap over. They're both 4cyl engines and I doubt the firing would be much different. Does anyone have any...

Exhaust Plate torque spec. 1980 Merc 20hp

Anyone know the exhaust plate bolts torque spec for a 1980 Merc 20hp? There's gasket sealant drying in there right now so a quick response would be nice. :D
Thanks
Eric

Tiller arm rubbing on transom mount- 1980-81 Merc 20hp

The tiller arm rubs on the top of the transom mount on the 20hp I'm putting together for a friend and it makes steering a pain. I'm making two of these outboards into one good one and both were rubbing in the same spot when I got them. Do you think it would work to put a little aluminum shim...

    Reluctant Powerhead

I'm swapping a 1980-81 20hp Merc Powerhead onto a 1976 20hp Merc engine (I'm assuming it'll work, same bolt pattern). My problem is that the 1980's powerhead is stuck on the midsection. I took out all 6 powerhead bolts and everthing inside the cowling holding it down then hooked the powerhead...

What was/is the best outboard you've owned

I noticed the thread for the first outboard you've owned and decided to start this one.
Mine is a 1976 9.8hp Merc kicker. It has saved me countless times when my big engines failed and always starts on the first pull, even after I swam for it when it fell off the boat.
Eric

    One of my best SHT's

This weekend I was camping at a local lake with my 16'er and made a pretty dumb decision. All day I had been commenting on how fast the dam was dumping the lake but I guess it didn't quite click in my brain. Anyways, night came and I pulled the bow of my boat up to shore and tied to a tree...

Difference between High-Thrust and normal Four strokes

I have a 1986 and a 1989 Yamaha 9.9 High Thrust Four Strokes. I was wondering if all I have to do to convert one to a normal engine for my 12' would be change the prop to something like a 12 pitch. Are there other differences (leg, ratios, rpm range...) Would one of these years be better to...

    Motor went for a swim

A couple days ago I was putting a 9.8hp Merc on a tinny at my cabin and the cowling I was holding onto fell off the motor and I watched the motor sink to the bottom in 35 feet of water (luckily lake water). I quickly dove in, forgetting about the cell phone in my pocket  , and pulled...
