Any advise on procedure to remove and replace thermostat and gaskets. I know I can do the job, but what is the best procedure getting everything apart? Thank you

I have a 79 2 stroke 40hp Mercury that started running ruff last fall when pulling up to the boat ramp. Took it home and put the hose on it and found that water was getting into one of the cylinders. Ran on one cylinder. HAven't done a compression test yet.
