    Tilt/Trim Problems

When I raise the motor all the way up to its highest level, fluid still runs out of the tilt reservoir when I open the cap. I don’t hear any hissing sound or any excess air escaping. I have not bled the system. I’ve had my motor serviced over the years, and I know that the zerc fittings on...

    Tilt/Trim Problems

I tightened the big nut on the tilt tube. No change. I’m still bouncing down. Also, I noted a grinding sound that disturbed me. I still can’t check the tilt/trim fluid in the reservoir without it immediately running out when I take the cap off. How likely is it that these problems are caused...

Bouncing Tilt and Trim on Way Down

The bouncing is only after the motor is raised up on the tilt function, well beyond the trim function zone at the bottom. And it only occurs when lowering the engine from that high tilt position.

Bouncing Tilt and Trim on Way Down

I'm having a tilt/trim problem I hear is common. When my engine is way up on "tilt," and then comes down, it lowers with a bunch of jumps, bumps and stutters. My fluid seems full, and runs out the cap if removed. I'm told I should keep refilling and raising and lowering the engine to purge air...

200 HP Evinrude/Johnson Carb Kit and Rebuild

Just got back from the lake. Engine started right up with one turn of the key. No blue smoke. I'm amazed. All I did was as instructed. I drained the carb bowls and flushed gas thru the carbs using the fuel squeeze bulb. Easiest start in years. Just wanted to follow up and let folks know. I have...

200 HP Evinrude/Johnson Carb Kit and Rebuild

Parallel. I turn it perpendicular when I manually inject fuel from the bulb. The dealer’s mechanic told me to that. That’s only 29 years ago. I always wondered where he ended up. Rusty? Red? Something like that. Sandy Creek Marina, Breckenridge, Texas. Yup, I’m getting old!!

200 HP Evinrude/Johnson Carb Kit and Rebuild

I’ve verified all those items except for the magnets, and as for the primer solenoid I’ve only verified it’s clicking on key push. I’ve not taken it apart. I suppose I could start by removing the hoses and doing the test described in the manual (assuring no internal leaks or blockage). My guess...

200 HP Evinrude/Johnson Carb Kit and Rebuild

I spoke to an experienced mechanic about the ongoing difficulty starting my 200 hp Evinrude. He agrees with much of what one or more of you has said, but I want to run the added thoughts by you all. Here goes. He told me to put all my rebuild kits, carb cleaners, new gaskets and primer solenoid...

200 HP Evinrude/Johnson Carb Kit and Rebuild

Can you explain a bit more? Is there a lot involved in removing those throttle bodies? Just hoses? The entire engine cowling? Where did you find new gaskets for the throttle bodies? I see part numbers in the old OMC site, but I’m not sure I found a distributor yet who carries those gaskets...

200 HP Evinrude/Johnson Carb Kit and Rebuild

I replaced my plugs last time and nothing changed. Checked gap, too. I'm convinced it's a fuel problem though I'll admit chasing the wrong things many times in my life.

200 HP Evinrude/Johnson Carb Kit and Rebuild

Yes I do all that, but I’ve not disassembled the primer solenoid. I have a new OMC one, so maybe after 29 years I ought to just replace it. But if I’m driving all the way to the lake, it seems I ought to clean out the carbs. They have to be terrible. I’ve left gas in them for months, over and...

200 HP Evinrude/Johnson Carb Kit and Rebuild

Constant starting problems over 25 years. Now worse than ever. Takes 30 minutes or more to start. Blow a lot of oil on first start up. I know I’ve left old gas in the carbs too frequently. My guess is the orifices and idle passages are all plugged and bunked up. My primer valve seems fine, but...

200 HP Evinrude/Johnson Carb Kit and Rebuild

A few questions for the experts: 1) My manual says that no wires or rods should be pushed into any of the carb passages, and that because the carb bodies are plastic, corrosive chemicals should be avoided. Will standard aerosol carb cleaner do the job? Really, no rods, wires or other objects? 2)...

    Evinrude Vindicator 1996 200 HP--Nightmare to Start

This engine has been a nightmare to start, even right after having "professional" tune-ups. I'm told the problem is gas sitting in the carbs, but that can't be it anymore. I drain them regularly. Also, my primer solenoid clicks and sounds good to the ear. But I'm convinced there's "gunk"...

Evinrude Vindicator 1996 Won’t Start for an Hour—then Runs Great!! Help!!

Thanks, I'm going to pull, clean, replace the primer solenoid. My lines are connected with tight zip ties. Those are small and the space cramped. Not sure how tight I can make new ones. Any thought on my using a different style clip?
