Top unit noisy after bearing change

Migrating this from a different thread for better visibility. My Volvo Penta 3.0 GLP-D sterndrive (SX drive) cut off on water, restart was not possible, would not turn over. Gearbox seizure, with a completely destroyed top bearing found once leg was pulled off. Mechanic replaced two bearings...

    Prop / prop shaft damage

There was no tangled-up fishing line or any other mess behind the prop. I attach a one-minute audio recording of my drive, in gear, just above idle, on land. Would be interested in personal opinions of others. Would this be noisy to the level "don't go anywhere before you swap your top unit" or...

    Prop / prop shaft damage

Haven't seen any from the outside, and the boat mechanic who changed the bearings did not mention finding any. Will ask him though, I'll be bringing the boat home on Tuesday after having been away. My current theory is that when I scraped the skegg at the end of my previous trip, while there was...

    Prop / prop shaft damage

Well, I was quick to doubt the previous service, however in my rush didn't notice there were 2 x 1.5 l gear oil charges on the invoice. Oil must have leaked somewhere else. Saga continues.

    Prop / prop shaft damage

Further update on this issue. After pulling off the drive, confirming that engine was running, and replacing the damaged front and rear bearings (nr 17 and 18 in the above diagram), things seem to be running. The mechanic who did the work tells me that there seem to be some residual noise coming...

    Prop / prop shaft damage

Following up this issue, @jimmbo was spot on. Top bearing shredded to pieces. During my previous service 1.5 l of gear oil was added, when it should be a minimum of 2.1 l. Whether there's anything else, remains to be seen. Engine working OK.

    Prop / prop shaft damage

Thank you. Not only was it bone dry, I could hear the hiss of the air rushing in as I was opening the hexagonal bolt of the dipstick. I will next check the drainplugs for any residue/metal shavings. The boat was serviced in April, and I paid for Gearcase oil, gearcase O ring, and O ring top...

    Prop / prop shaft damage

Removed spark plugs. All four dry. Tried turning the engine at the front, where the belts are, I can turn it over manually, quite hard but turns over.

    Prop / prop shaft damage

Hi, I had an unfortunate series of what I thought small incidents recently. 5.2 m Glastron MX175 runabout, with VP sterndrive. 1. Upon returning home with my boat and parking it, I manually pushed the trailer to back it up in my driveway and hit and scraped my timber fence with my...

Alternator and fuel pump on Volvo Penta 3.0 GLP-D

Just a belated update to this issue. My fuel pump is mechanical, not electrical, so anything I describe above is largely irrelevant to the issue. I was with a faulty fuel gauge and an empty tank.

Oil pressure switch / oil pressure sender

Time for humble pie. I can see the experienced people starting to smile. ... I've been deceived by a faulty fuel gauge/sender/float. That's for another day. I ran out of fuel. My gauge was on the half mark, with an empty tank. Would never go below half, I always thought I'm safe with half a...

Oil pressure switch / oil pressure sender

The mystery deepens. After 5 days of investigations (and no intended fix!) my fuel pump works and engine runs. I've decided this morning to get a simple vacuum gauge and have some numbers on the vacuum this fuel pump creates, and not just a finger test, before I remove the pump and buy a new...

Oil pressure switch / oil pressure sender

An update on diagnosing this above issue. It certainly looks like the mechanical fuel pump. 1. Removed hose from pickup/anti-syphon valve from top of tank. Connected a clear hose, and checked for blockage here by slowly pumping/sucking up fuel. Fuel rises quite easily; there seems to be no...

Oil pressure switch / oil pressure sender

Thank you, great help! I'll start tomorrow by adding another 20 liters of fuel...gauge shows half, but who knows? Only got the boat a few months ago, and always kept fuel above the half mark, where it currently sits. The gauges are quite old, most of them behave, except the RPM that occasionally...
