Early 70's Johnson 75 HP Dry Cylinder

Just a quick question. About 15 years ago, my brother had a V4 75 HP that wouldn't run out properly like a cylinder wasn't firing, so he took it to the shop. They told him he had a dry cylinder, but I'm just curious if that was a reed/intake problem? I've never heard of a dry cylinder since then.

air hole in 9.5 HP carb

This is off a 1971 Johnson 9.5 HP. I was working on getting my carb cleaned up a second time around after a rebuild, and the hole with the arrow pointed to it in pic 1 has got my attention. It had a lot of goo in it the first time, and the second time I've taken it apart. I've soaked the...

71 Johnson 9.5 HP not revving out

This old motor starts and runs good at low rpm. I've already replaced water pump, lower prop shaft seal and fuel pump. At WOT, squeezing the bulb doesn't help to make it run better (although it did before the new fuel pump!). I've rebuilt carb (didn't replace expansion plugs) and made sure I...

    Underpropped?

I had posted this thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=204674 and they suggested I come to this forum for more info on my prop questions. I have a 1984 15 1/2 foot Cheetah bass boat with a 93 Yamaha 115 and it's turning 5800 rpms at WOT. I know it's a 13 1/2 inch diameter, but...

Replacing clear coat with gel coat?

A previous owner of my boat used car clear coat instead of gel coat on the upper deck of my boat, and now it's peeling badly. See attached picture. I was thinking about sanding this down and fixing it, but with what? The maroon gel coat isn't great on the top deck, but I was thinking about...

    Prop Size?

Hi, researched this and couldn't really find any information on how to check size. I have a 93 Yamaha 115 with an aluminum prop that measures 6 3/4 inches from the outside of one blade to the center of the shaft hole, so that means it's a 13.5 inch prop, but don't know the pitch. I measured...

    motor height

Alright, I know this has been discussed to death, but I couldn't find any specifics on my setup. The most applicable post I found was http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=203309&highlight=motor+height, and while it mentioned starting with A/V plate 1 to 2 inches above the bottom of the...

Where to attach wire to tach gauge

I was replacing the steering cable on my boat with a 93 Yamaha 115 and severed the tach wire to the tach gauge. The power (purple), ground (black) and lights (blue) are still hooked up, but apparently the green wire was disconnected. This is per Seloc manual, saying green coming out of control...

    Heavy knocking/pinging

My Dad has an older white and red Yamaha WaveRunner that's like a 400 or 500 cc I believe and it knocks or pings heavy at idle, then clears up as you accelerate. My brother replaced plug and impeller shaft seals, but it doesn't accelerate very good at all. Any ideas? Could this be a...

93 Yamaha 115 hard to steer

This steers much easier in idle than when it's running down the lake. If the steering cable needed to be replaced, seems that it would be hard to steer at idle as well? The previous owner didn't maintain it very well and I put grease into about 5 grease fittings related to the steering on the...

1971 Johnson 9.5 won't stay in forward gear

I replaced the output shaft seal and the water pump, and reattached the lower unit twice, but still won't stay in forward. Neutral and reverse are fine. I also tried adjusting the shift adjuster under the engine cowling, in the front, and even when I adjust it all the way, all it does it move...

1/8 inch hole in back of lower unit on Yamaha 115

It's a 93 model, if that matters, but the guy I bought it from says that the 1/8 inch hole just above the gearcase in the lower unit is for the speedometer gauge. I checked lower unit oil after we ran it 10 minutes in a lake and it's clear w/o any water in it. The hole in the lower unit is...

Is rebuild difficult for 86 Johnson GT 150?

I have experience rebuilding a few automotive engines (down to bare block), but not marine. I have a Seloc manual for this motor, and a rebuild doesn't look that hard after reading the powerhead chapter. I took it to a shop a few weeks ago and they said the fuel tank and carbs are clean, the...
