A while back there was quite a large thread where fishermen from carolina were taking about the things of days gone by. It was a long thread and the auther told stories of the guys who worked the boats of the time, his granny was a doctor in the town. The thread went on long enough that the...
Re: Going foamless
This is the result of about 12 hours worth of work with
these tools. I got most of the gelcoat off because it was damaged and Im down to the metal flake layer.
I can now start to repair the keel, 3 holes and various gouges.
Still thinking about using the...
Re: Going foamless
Finally got the hull flipped yesterday with the aid of the gantry, hoist and my son. I think its gained a little wieght since I first started this project.
It looks like it was originally brown metallic flake and someone painted over it--and not to good since it is...
Re: Going foamless
Ok --its been a while.
I finally got the deck installed, tabbed in and a layer of 1708 on top then an additional layer of 3/4 csm on top of that. I had pictures......but they seem to have vanished off my harddrive.
So on to the replacing the foam sides...
Re: Going foamless
The results:
Failure was achieved on every piece between 95-105 lbs.
The poly failed the earliest-- showing a clear debonding between the wood and the foam altho a piece of foam was still attached.
Raw wood showed some debonding.
Epoxy has the...
Re: Going foamless
Ive seen the spec stats on 2 lb foam on US Composites website. But no where did it relate adhesive strength. So I set out to find out how sticky 2 lb foam is.
The setup:
2lb foam from US Composites
Pieces of 3/4" marine ply.
I made 4 molds from the...
Re: Going foamless
Tried to work on the boat yesterday --got rained out. So when it started training today I was determined to push forward anyway. IM glad I did I had a kickass day.
This is simply the best layup Ive ever done. A piece of 1708, wetted perfectly and no air bubbles. I...
Re: Going foamless
Looks like working on the boat today is out -- its raining--so here are some pics:
Stringer and bulkhead-- bulkhead ( on right) has one layer of csm on it. Stringer is still open on top. Foam was smoothed and filleted but still had areas where it was difficult to get...
Re: Going foamless
Welcome to Fun With Foam!!
Got started on the bulkheads today. I needed a way to get a form for the 2 part foam and I had an absolute need to use ducktape in some way today. I fitted and formed the EPS -- even put a chamfer on the inside edge so the 2-part would...
Re: Going foamless
All sanded down to shell level. 36 grit on a belt sander took about 30 minutes.
Close up.
Im kinda at a standstill --except for small detail work. Ive used 5 gals of resin to get to this point. Five more gals and the 2 lb foam is on order from US...
Re: Going foamless
My tools for the day.
Mixed the 2 part urethane 8 lb foam in the big bucket and then poured into the stringer shells.
Had a blow out -- the foam started pouring into a place it wasnt supposed to be. No problem --just cleans up easy...
Re: Going foamless
This is the transom installed. Two 3/4 " marine ply coated with resin --then bonded with csm and resin. Then an additional 3/4" marine ply "stiffener" where the motor bolts in. The stiffener will be bonded to the stringers on either side. The stiffener had to be cut away...
Re: Going foamless
Layout of stringers. The center stringer has no wood in it and extends to the bottom of the keel. The center stringer sides are not vertical but curve inward so the bottom of the stringer is more narrow than the top -- a triangle shape. No way I can get a power sander...
Re: Going foamless
Cap removed.
Closeup of transom -- mostly mush.
Transom wood removed.
Deck removed and top of stringer removed with a air cutter. I removed the 1x1 with a prybar. Foam filled the space under the deck and provided a lot of support...
Re: Going foamless
My apologies--I wasnt going to really post much about this boat --it was just gonna be a quick kinda thing and the boat is now topless.
So I will start at the beginning.
Craigslist boat-- guy wanted 500$ I got him down to 450. 1980 fiberking sportmaster trihull...
