I downloaded the brute manual for my non-breakaway mount and I am scratching my head.
-Does the decker have to be attached and supported by the bow or can it hang over the edge of the boat?
-my bow is 3/4 11-ply sealed with varnish....do I need a steel backer plate or are big washers enough...
I screwed up.
Varnishing by bow mount motor deck.
somewhere between coats 2 and 4 of varnish I started using timber oil. The wood is baltic birch.
The oil made its way to covering some of the edge of the opposite side that had nothing on it.
So now I am not sure what to do. nce die will end...
I have an intelligent charger and an Optima D34M
It has 3 settings: standard / deep-cycle / gel,AGM
The optima website states don't use the gel,AGM setting because it won't fully charge my battery and may damage it over time.
Now I did think that they had excellent customer support...
I recently added a spot near my trailer tongue to put my boats 6 gallon tank while trailering.
When I fill it up should I take it off of the trailer before fueling?
My neighbor told me that for safety reasons (sparks) I need to take it off and set it on the curb for fueling.

I have 6 gallon manually vented tank in my tin fishing boat it sits under the port seat. There are 2 things I dislike about it:
1) I have to disconnect/connect the fuel line at the motor every outing and a little fuel sometimes spills.
2) There is a manual vent on it and I can often smell...

I have a 40HP 2007 4 stroke efi Mercury motor and purchased a Fuel Filter & Water Separator and was googling for instructions on how to install it.
I ran across a forum that said Mercury recommends that these devices NOT be installed.
What gives?

I have an AGM deep cycle battery and have been charging at the end of the day with an AGM charger.
Someone else I know has theirs charging off of the boat motor whenever it runs so it cycles several times on an outing. Is this charging method OK?

I have a plain old aluminum boat and I smell gas fumes. The tank I have is plastic.
1) do plastic tanks vent both out an in?
2) do steel tanks vent only inwards so gas fumes do not leak out?
3) can I buy a non-outfuming vent for a plastic tank?

This is my first outboard so some of this post may seem trivial to others.
-2007 40HP 4 stroke merc tiller
-900lbs of aluminum to push, under propped (prop should be pushing 1100-1500lbs)
-My boats idle speed is 3mph (too fast for trolling)
-there is no play or spring return in the throttle...
I have some extra plywood in the garage: 3/4" baltic birch and a lot of 1/2" spruce.
I live in South Western Ontario and for my 16 foot tin I want to build casting decks front and back.
For baltic birch I have read comments from "rots like a tomato" to people who used it for building a transom...
The best way would be to listen to other boats, but, I do not have that opportunity to listen to another 40HP new 4-stroke.
The motor seems to vibrate a bit at half throttle and I cannot talk to my buddy without yelling. I am at the motor he is about 10 ft away.
