The plug wires can be removed and replaced. They more or less unscrew from electrodes within the coil housing.

2005 Mercury 150hp XR6 Oil Alarm After High Speed

We haven't over heated it. Not sure about it's past... I'm been an OMC guy for many years. I always got rid of the VROs on them. Pre-mix is the best oil injection you can get. But my son probably prefers the convenience of the oil tank. If it was mine I'd get rid of it. But, I'm old school like...

2005 Mercury 150hp XR6 Oil Alarm After High Speed

I'll have to pay closer attention to the beeps on start up... It makes blue smoke, so I think it's oiling ok. Thanks.

I think we get a single beep upon starting. Is this the self test?

Fuel Dripping From The Carbs When It's Hot Out - 200HP Johnson 2001

When my bowls were leaking I sanded them on a flat surface to smooth out the warpage. Also, there's a port on the bottom of the bowls that is known to leak too. I sealed mine off with JB Weld. I also replaced the bowl gaskets when reinstalling. My carbs haven't leaked since. It's probably been...

2005 Mercury 150hp XR6 Oil Alarm After High Speed

Yeah, I'm sure it's one of those typical reed switch/magnet float deals... I guess the make/break situation will be obvious once we start tinkering with it.

2005 Mercury 150hp XR6 Oil Alarm After High Speed

Duke - Thanks for the advise. Regarding the float switch... What are the states of the switch in relation to the oil level? Is it... A Oil Full = Switch Closed (0Ω) Oil Empty = Switch Open (Infinite) or B Oil Full = Switch Open (Infinite) Oil Empty = Switch Closed (0Ω) Based on your comment...

2005 Mercury 150hp XR6 Oil Alarm After High Speed

My son bought a Nitro bass boat with a 150hp XR6 earlier this year. This boat and motor has been a bit of a learning curve for us (getting it started is a real challenge for the uninitiated), but we've got to the point where it starts ok and runs well. The only remaining issue is (we think) the...

    Opinions on aftermarket johnson/evinrude parts

I've used Sierra and GLM over the years and their parts seem fine. Unfortunately, over the past few years a glut of low quality Chinese parts have appeared on the market. I would advise staying clear of these.

Possible to convert CDI timer base and stator another year?

OK, sorry I read your message backwards. I was thinking you wanted the newer system on the older motor... I do know that there were significant changes in around '78 or so that changed quite a few things on the 85hp including displacement. Hopefully, someone will chime in...

Possible to convert CDI timer base and stator another year?

I had a '76 85hp for a number of years. Seemed like a fairly simple, reliable and solid ignition system as far as I could tell. Why not just fix the original system?

Neither of those motors are speed demons but they should get along at a nice clip when matched with the right boat/load.
