I have an 1985 evenrude vro 40. a few years ago while cruising the motor kept dying. it sound as if it was binding. so I poured oil into the gas tank and it ran great. recently, at around 3500 rpm the motor would starts to flucuate up and down. It would not hold steady at 5000 rpm and bog down...
