Hi guys,
Figured I'd post my fuel consumption figures that I took about a week ago.
Engine is a Mercury 1970 1150 1600cc inline 6 two stroke.
Idle in gear - 7 litres/hour
35mph (60km/h) - 12-13 liters/hour
43mph (70km/h) WOT - 22 liters/hour
WOT is around 6000rpm
Running a 15" aluminium prop...
This engine belongs to a single mom about 200 miles from my location. For those with an atlas, she's in Bloemfontein, South Africa. I'm in Klerksdorp, South Africa. Her dad and brother are also too far away to help and have no marine engine knowledge. There are a couple of guys close to her that...
OK, these movies are actually supposed to be one, but the windows movie editor doesn't support mp4 files. Luckily youtube have their own codec so you guys can watch the movies.
OK, there's no cheating on these movies. I used my cell phone to film myself. So I do get the angle wrong sometimes...
Hi guys,
Was wondering. If I want to fit a water pressure and water temp gauge to my 1970 1150, how would I go about it?
Would it be possible/adivsable to simply Tee the water pressure to the top of the head where the tell tale comes out, or is there a specific plug I can use?
And the same...
Hi Guys,
It's finally time for my big thank you thread. In this thread I'll go over the complete history of the engine, and what we did to it, and what we still have to do. I'll also be adding pics and movies of it later on, I'll explain the details later in the thread.
First off - Thank yous

Hi guys!

I need to get my charge voltage down on my 1970 1150 inline 6. At WOT I'm still only getting 4800rpm, but I'm blowing everything up! Toll now stands at 1x fuel pump and 2x rev counters. Hits just over 18V at WOT.

Is there any regulator I can use aside from the...
Hi guys!

Had the boat back on the dam Saturday. Seems like all is finally well!!! Thanx to all the inputs from you guys. It's a bit hard to start and takes a good 10 secondes of cranking before it fires up, but all is well from then on.

I did lift the motor 1in last week...
Hi guys!

Pulled the motor off the boat last week-end inorder to build up the transom by 1 inch.

As I lay the engine on it's back (Spark plugs down) a small rubber insert fell out of the cowling. It's about 1/2in. in diameter and steps down to about 1/4in. Has a very small...
Hi guys,

As you probably know my '70 Merc 1150 is a bit over propped at the moment. I can get a skier out of the water and pull a tube without hassles. But a 3 person worm is a hassle. I cannot get the worm to plane. I just can't get the rpm above 2500.

Will venting my prop...
Hi guys!

Had a great week-end at the dam thanx to all the advice gathered here!

Motor is running good, but it's over propped at this stage :( Running a '70 1150 on a 18 foot deep V hull Bowrider (9 seater if you load up the people) I'm only getting 4800 rpm at WOT on a 17...
OK,

I got the flywheel and stator off. The stator was painted. There was no ways it could get a decent earth. Cleaned it up a bit at the contact points to earth and added a round terminal to solid earth. Re-installed the flywheel.

But now I'm having hassles re-installing...
Hi guys!

I need a little help and advice with a coupla things. Motor is a 1970 1150 with a blue band LU.

I'm getting very irratic readings from my stator. Both before and after the rectifier. I'm suspecting a bad earth? Now and then at rpm I get a nice steady 16.8-17.0VAC...
