I took my upper carb off to find out what is wrong with it. Not getting enough gas for idle. The fuel pump kits I have installed on it all have two check valve diaphragms and the manual shows the use of only one of them. There is one made of thin rubber like the main diaphragm and one made of...
You have a face plate on the front of your motor. Approximately 12 " below the knob on the faceplate you should find the serial number on the main pivot. It is easiest to see when the motor is in the fully down running position.
I have been carefully rebuilding my lower unit on an older Merc 500. 1977 vintage. I have replaced every seal (some of them twice) and replaced the needed bearings ( all). I have tried to follow the manual (mercury) and done my due diligence but upon checking my gear oil after each usage, I come...
I took a good look at my oil fill vents on my lower unit and what I found was a mess. I used a dremel tool to smooth them out and went to the Hardware store and bought rubber o rings. I used them for the gaskets on the new screws to get a positive seal. I was told that that wasn't a good idea...
Update!...............................................Just reassembled my motor ( Installed the lower unit), and want to check for proper shift (forward, neutral and reverse). I have always started it to check but want to know how I can tell if I don't start it. As I write, the shift lever fully...
The water supply tube fits up inside of the drive shaft housing next to the main exhaust. The bend in the tube faces that exhaust and will be on the bottom as it is installed. There are two holes up at the top of the drive housing and the tube fits into the hole closest to the main exhaust box...
I was recently given an old 50 HP Merc motor. I was told the motor was in good running condition when it was abandoned several years ago. The owner passed away and a neighbor "rescued" it. It is dried out to the point of being hard to turn with the plugs out. What I would like to know is what to...
I recently bought a used trolling motor with no manual from a widow that knew nothing about it. It has some features on it that I never thought I would need but I have to get acquainted correctly because the ladies brother took the wires off the old boat and cut them in a few places...
I borrowed the picture from another thread so you could see that you don't raise the motor to find the serial number. I have a 1977 50 HP and had some real ups and downs with it. Started with the fuel system then into the wiring. The insulation on all the internal wiring was crumbling and...
I have a 50 HP mercury with a very weak coolant stream from the pump. Just removed the lower and expected to find a badly worn impeller, but it looks just fine. I haven't experienced any overheating problems but thought the pump would need some help since everything else needed attention before...
Is it possible to damage a new stator if the trigger is faulty. Need to know before I install the new stator. Not clear if the trigger is the problem.-Thanks, Merc
Purchased an older Sylvan with a 50 hp Mercury and when it went out on a test run it ran smooth but would do no more than 5 mph. So far I have cleaned and adjusted the carbs and replaced the bulb and hose, and the spark plugs. Found out the throttle linkage was a mess so had that redone. Now the...
