    actually the older props have a press in rubber sleeve in between the drive spline shaft and the prop and after time it starts to slip, and your description is a classic description the easy is to mark a line on it and give it a ride and let it slip at least once then pull it out and inspect...

    2006 15 hp mercury reverse lock not working

    i have a 1996 and it is slightly different but the sliding the part circled in red sets the reverence lock points on my motor and i would guess its the same on yours, i keep mine set so its only locked in reverse , so if i bump some thing in forward it kicks up
