What is the best method for bench testing the rectifier/regulator on this motor? I saw on CDI to attach leads from ohmmeter to the yellow and red leads of the rectifier, then switch the ohmmeter leads and see if you get the same, or different, reading. Should there be continuity one way and a...
I just replaced the "spoke" diaphragm in my son's VRO fuel pump (not using VRO). Is this fuel delivery, or for oil from the tank? It had fuel in it when I took it apart, but not sure how that pump works. Doesn't seem like two diaphragms would be necessary.
Motor was falling on its face and not...
My son recently bought the subject motor. I went through carbs, cleaned them and replaced bowl gaskets and spaghetti gaskets. Milled the backside of the carbs as they were slightly warped. Stator, optical sensor, power pack and plug wires are new from CDI. I have not messed with the fuel pump or...
My son recently bought the subject motor. Trying to ID the actual model number, but the placard on the mid section is worn out. The ID number on the title is G04034872. Is there any way to determine model number from the ID number? Does it make a difference when ordering parts, not having the...
The service manual says I need to put a piston stop in place when I pull the flywheel. Is this absolutely necessary? A mechanic friend of mine says he thinks it might put too much pressure on rods and bearings for that piston.
Can anyone tell me what the powerhead base is supposed to look like? I've attached before and after shots of mine. There was significant corrosion at the fore section of the base on both the exhaust cover (midsection) and the powerhead base. I added JB weld to fill the area after sandblasting it...
Developed an exhaust leak at the gasket between midsection and powerhead. Is the powerhead removal as straight forward as it looks, or are there things I need to look out for? Plan on using heat at the base of the powerhead to help with bolt removal. This is a saltwater motor, so my main concern...
Typical backyarder issue. Fixed one problem only to create another one. Had to take the flywheel cover and shifter/timing base components off to fix a bushing on the starter bendix. When reinstalling, something changed. The timing advance works, but doesn't slide back to low idle, kind of stuck...
My 115 won't crank enough to get spark. Ran it this past Saturday and it ran well, although it was a bit hard to start for the run home.
What it does is this. At first, when I turn the key, it will crank normally, then it bogs down like the battery is out of juice. Battery checked out fine. I...
I've got a 1990 85hp CVETLD. The schematic doesn't show a dust seal for the main tilt rod. I went to the local Yamaha dealer and they couldn't find anything for it. Anyone have insight into this? A compatible part#?
Thanks in advance.
Probably a dumb question, but is this even a possibility? I found one off the 2002 and wonder how different it is from the one on my 1990 model.
Thanks in advance.
My outboard's tach started acting up a few weeks back. Didn't think much of it, just though the tach was going bad. Fast forward to this past Sunday and the engine has no spark due to low battery. I got it to run hooking it up to my trolling motor battery and everything was working fine...
I've got a 1990 85 HP model CVETLD. The tilt trim unit's been an issue since I've had the motor. I found one that goes on an '85 90HP (90ETLK). They are certainly different, but because I found it online, I can't measure it to tell if it would work or not on my motor. I realize it's a longshot...
My outoboard has been overheating only at higher end RPM's but cools off at idle. As long as I don't run wide open, it doesn't overheat. That said, I'm not getting full my full top-end RPM's unless I trim the motor out to the point that it wants to porpoise. I'm thinking the problems are...
I bought an entire CDI powerpack kit that includes an optic sensor. I pulled the bolt on top of the timing wheel and saw that the metal on the timing wheel and keyway is really rusted. It appears that removing the timing wheel will pretty much destroy it. I dont' really have a problem with that...
