thunderbolt 800 wont go into gear...

Re: thunderbolt 800 wont go into gear... Drop the lower unit once more (if you haven't got it fixed already) and get a feel for how the lower unit shifts. Don't use vise-grips on the splined shaft, a 3/8" (I think) socket fits nicely onto the splines, and you can rotate the shift shaft easily...

    71 Merc 800 reed blocks

In the process of rebuilding this motor (thread here http://forums.iboats.com/mercury-mariner-outboards/1971-merc-800-rebuild-refurbish-589826.html) and have acquired a couple replacement reed blocks (thanks to the kindness of a fellow iboater) but they are slightly different than the originals...

Mercury Control Box With Trim Wiring Question

Re: Mercury Control Box With Trim Wiring Question Yes the 5-pin socket on the front of the controller is for a tach, temp gauge and trim gauge I think. There are often tach harnesses listed for sale on that auction site at reasonable prices. Here are a couple wiring diagrams for your...

Piston and wrist pin replacements - Merc 800

Hoping to get some clarification on replacement pistons and wrist pins. Have been working on refurbishing a 1971 Merc 800. Have been researching replacement pistons for this motor. Merc has SOOOOO many different part numbers for the same piston that I'm not sure what I should/could be looking...

    War with lower unit

Re: War with lower unit Yeah, that crank looks nasty. You're going to need a wear sleeve installed on the crank. P/N A-86349A1. Here is a brief detail about it.

    War with lower unit

Re: War with lower unit Here's a few photos for reference. I can't see how the driveshaft could be seized on the lower carrier assy. There is about 1/16" clearance all around between the driveshaft and neck of the carrier assy. It would take A LOT of corrosion to seize things up there. On the...

    We're Penniless here in Canada

No, we're not broke, we've just officially done away with the penny as of today. Pennies are no longer being distributed as currency. Instead, merchants will "round up or round down" the price to the nearest nickel. Guess which way most will "round" off the prices to. The penny is still...

Replacing bleed lines on 71 Merc 800

As part of a rebuild process I will be replacing the bleed lines (if that term is correct) that run between/from/to different parts of the block. I believe they re-circulate lubricant to the main crankshaft bearings. Can I use clear fuel line to replace the original black lines? The original...

    O.P.P. police trucks

Re: O.P.P. police trucks I had the opportunity to work on these LAV's (light armoured vehicles) a couple years ago. Really cool experience. We were subcontracted to put in the electronics, lighting and communications systems and modify the suspensions systems among other tasks. Once serious...

    '79 mercury 115 trim/tilt wiring issue

Re: '79 mercury 115 trim/tilt wiring issue Wire is replaceable. Did that repair on my 71 Merc 800 a few years ago. Follow the wire down to the cyl. There is a small rect box mouned to the side of the cyl. Two (?) screws hold a cover plate on the box. Inside the box is a micro-switch that the...

    1971 Merc 800 rebuild / refurbish

Re: 1971 Merc 800 rebuild / refurbish Here are photos of #4 piston top. Rings are intact but top ring is seized in groove. #4 Cylinder diameters as follows measured at three points; top (sparkplug side) - 2.878 (parallel with crank) and 2.877 (90*) middle (just below ports) - 2.874...

    1971 Merc 800 rebuild / refurbish

A bit of background info first. Have begun the task of refurbishing my 1971 Merc 800 motor. Problem began with cronic poor idle performance and stalling when put into gear. I also found signs of water intrusion on #4 cyl - rusted plug and steam cleaned piston head. After pulling the powerhead...

'71 Merc 800 "center main" bearing question

Re: '71 Merc 800 "center main" bearing question Will look into renting/borrowing a hone. Might even buy one if they are reasonably priced. I can see how that would show the high points but it won't tell me "how much" out of round it might be. I took photos of the center main bearing race for...
