    timing wondering ???

    I have a 1978 johnson 70 hp while checking the timing on the # 1 cyl noticed timing wondering severely ???, never quits firing just wonders where you cant even see timing marks what do you think might be happening.     I was cheching the wiring on the motor 78 johnson 70hp and found the red wire on the rectifier completely burned into . Just what function does th e rectifier serve. the motor still ran just could not get it to idle.

    I under stand the serial number is stamped on the powerhead, as well as the swivel bracket , where woud it be located on the powerhead. I canot seem to find it .
