It's been awhile but wanted to thank everyone's input. I brought the boat to a marine mechanic that got the motor running but "badly". Ends up the number 1 and 4 pistons are way below compression numbers. I was planning to sell the boat in the spring so I decided to list the boat "as is" and...
Update: I replaced the regulator/rectifier, replaced the 4 year old battery and put everything back together. I now have 4 strong sparks! Took it on the water ( 5 minutes away ) and no start. What's interesting is that the starter disengages within 2 seconds. Not sure why.
AND... it looks like the voltage regulator is not passing the diode test! Put in the new stator and switch box. Looks like I will be looking for a regulator next.
I'm done checking everything as per manual ( DVA tester, multi meter, crank switch, etc.) and everything points to the stator - AGAIN!! I just replaced it 2 years ago. Is there something that likes to destroy stators?? Bumpy seas?
Thanks for the advice. It appears I have a spark issue. Finally got around to checking the spark. I have a spark on 1 and 4 plug but not on 2 and 3. Will have to do diagnostics when I have time.
I did the 32 BTDC WOT Static. Will get her in the water tomorrow and fine tune the air/fuel mix. What my manual is missing is the idle set screw procedure (located at the bottom of the timing tower arm). I'm assuming that if I need to adjust, I will need to disconnect all throttle linkage to...
Thanks for the reply. It was the timing light that was the problem. Now I'm trying to figure out how to adjust the idle. Not the idle mixture screw but the idle stop bolt at the bottom of the timing tower. Wondering if I need to disconnect all throttle linkage before making the adjustment.
And the winner is: Jiggz!
I just got back from buying another (more simplistic) timing light and Bingo!! - have my timing set and ready to take out for a test run.
Thanks for the reply!
Motor died 20 miles out on Lake Superior when I brought it back to idle to anchor. Was not able to restart the motor except at full throttle but would die when trying to shift into gear. Got back to the house (Towboat US) and did a bunch of maintenance ( re-build the carbs, check the reeds...
