Thanks everyone, I have everything coming to complete a full service. Boat will be kept in my garage nice and dry and out of the elements. I have service records from every season most of them were just normal, oil changes, outdrive service, impellers. Bellows were done 2 years ago. I’ve been...
I was just randomly browsing eBay throughout the week and found a 2005 Bayliner 185(I know I know) pictures looked good enough buy it now was $8,000 no reserve. So I put my max bid at $3,000 and ended up winning the boat and almost brand new trailer(2024) for $2500! I thought to myself this...
Thank you. I found my manuals and read into them. I will order a kit (not a cheap Amazon one) and give a rebuild a shot. Right now I have the carburetor sitting in a bucket of carb cleaner, I’ve let carbs soak in the past and had great results.
I pulled apart the factory carb today, not much to it, but I noticed a lot of the passages were visibly gummed up. I pulled everything I could find out of it and will order a rebuild kit for it.
The Amazon carb on the boat now actually turned out to be decent with doing some real fine tuning...
It’s a 2bbl merc carb.
The air/fuel screw does change the way it acts but I feel as if I have to make a lot of turns for it to make a difference. From fully screwed in to like 4 turns out for it to make any type of noticeable difference.
I’ll look into those websites, will probably send my...
I agree. We used to have a carb rebuild shop in our town but he’s no longer around.
I am more then willing to send my original carb out to get rebuilt, I’ve found a couple places online that sell rebuilt merc carbs, but I can’t find any reviews on them and I am very mechanically inclined but...
97 Merc 4.3 no history of carb repair or replacement. Boat was always difficult to start cold-like first initial start at the ramp. No matter which different way I tried with the throttle.
So I had an Amazon gift card I’m sure you can already see where this is going, and I bought a carb off of...
Just wanted to provide an update :
Took the boat to the lake today and it would crank and not start. Getting extremely fustrated and almost giving up it finally dawned on me……….the lanyard switch was in the off position 🤦🏻♂️
After feeling incredibly stupid for not checking that first the boat...

Is the ignition module the black box next to the distributor?
Do you have a link for a replacement Delco Est incase I run into issues with that module failing?
Thanks everyone, I will keep everything intact as of right now. I will still order the 3 wire trigger, cap, rotor to keep on the boat as they are easy enough to change on the water if needed. I was hoping to go out again this weekend but the weather is not looking to great.
Installed the new coil tonight and the boat fired up instantly. Didn’t have to pump the throttle or anything. With the boat in neutral I gave it a couple revs and there was no hesitation or anything. Revved smoothly.
Now my mind is wondering do I leave well enough alone? Or do I...
