    Timing was at 1 degree ATDC when it should be at 1 degree BTDC. Not sure how it moved on its own. Correct timing, and clean spark plugs gets me to 15 inches of vacuum. I will still replace the gaskets on the manifold but it should run fine now

    Checked compression and they all held 175 psi for over 5 minutes and while I waited i cleaned the #4 spark plug because it had alot of dry carbon fouling. Started the boat and got 10 inches of vacuum now. But this is in the drive way so the increase in vacuum is probably due to no exhaust...

    I rebuilt the engine last April and it ran well all summer. Ill check the compression and try the oil trick around the sealing surfaces of the manifold tomorrow morning. I really doubt it the timing because I haven't messed with it in a while but it does act like it's stuck in base timing mode...

    It's for sure getting fuel. The accelerator pump sprays fine too when I prime it. Then the engine does sound like its firing just not staying running

    Update: tried 360 degree rotation of the distributor at TDC, result: backfires through carb. Verified tdc at #1 clyinder with a compression gauge and set distributor at #1 spark plug, result is firing but not starting.     Rechecked the distributor pointing at #1 at tdc and it does. I say a video on YouTube where the guy didn't do the special timing procedure he just set it to 8 degrees BTDC and it fired right up. Guess I'll give it a shot. BTDC can't hurt much.

    I followed the timing procedure in the manual and used a timing light the adjust the timing while cranking it. The distributor was initially lined up with the marks from the factory and adjusted the timing starting from there. The spark plug wires go to the correct spark plugs i checked

    yes its a 1992 VIP. Compression is 165,165, 165, 170. I was hoping that at the worst I'd have to rebuild the top end

    The serial number looks like OD8104 but its very worn. 3.0L Mercruiser the engine would go over 1400 rpm before the new carburetor. The oil level is a bit high with no milky appearance just alittle dark. Im not sure if its a new problem the previous owner won't respond after he sold me this heap.
