I'm about at the end of my coil ... For some reason the engine keeps burning coils. When I install a new one it runs perfect, for a while. Then the coil lets go. The last one ran for 30 min. I list out what I've don to the engine so far.
New Points
New Rotor
New plugs
New power pack
Rewired...
When I shut off the key the gearcase kicks into forward. I know that when the ignition is turned off, 12V is provided to green/blue wires to keep it neutral until the flywheel stops turning. This happens when the red lead from the rectifier supplies 12V back up through the push button remote...
I have a 1968 55hp Evinrude I rebuilt a few years ago. I put in a new power pack, coil, points, wires, plugs... It runs perfect for a while and then starts to break up or become hard to start. Each time it appears to be the coil. One of the new OEM actually developed a crack. Any idea why the...
I have a an old 55hp Evinrude that I rebuilt (with much help from folks on this board). I've been running it all summer with a few minor hiccups. One was a sticking advanced timing rod. Unfortunately, I messed with carbs before figuring it out. After pulling the flywheel, cleaning up the points...
With much help from people on this site I rebuilt a 68 Evinrude a few weeks back. Since then I've had asporadic performance.

Re: 1968 Evinrude 55hp. Low Compression in top cyl. Scorched sleeve
You're right about the aluminum. I took a small metal tooth scraper (like a dentist uses) and was able to flake some of it off. I also removed the exhaust cover to get a look at the piston. Rings are shot for sure. Piston looks...
I have a 1968 55hp Evinrude that have almost 0 compression in the top cylinder. Popped the head to see whats what. There's definitely some damage. Wondering if it can be honed and rings replaced or if I should have it bored (assuming it's worth fixing)? The picture came out pretty good. I think...
I'm interested in purchasing a small fishing boat that I can tow with my Corolla. It's rated at 1500lbs (assuming 150lb driver). There's a 1965 starcraft with a 50hp merc for sail and I'm wondering if it would be doable. Anyone know how much it weighs?
Thanks in advance
