88 bayliner capri, 5.7, cobra. The engine thermostat is deep inside the thermostat housing, and it appears inaccesible. How do I replace it?

I just greased the nipple on the outdrive and I spotted grease lying on the inside of the gimble out in the open. I assume what I just put in didn't really go in like it should. I can see a small, maybe 4" long tube coming from the backside of the zirc going to another unit and the fresh grease...
This is not the hydrolic trim system, it's the power steering pump which is not exposed to water ( as far as I know). It keeps coming back, where is it coming from?
It used to shut off just fine, but now it just keeps running and I have to choke it out to stop it.:confused: Have I got a hung solenoid? Which one is it? Tell me it's one on top of the engine, and not on the impossibly difficult to reach starter?
