Cannot get fire unless the throttle is almost wide open, then when put into gear it will die. Coil problem ? Will start but not unless throttle is set on fast. Will not run even out of gear with throttle set below shift.
Would anyone recommend running my gas line direct to the engine instead of using the part#22833 receiver on my 1982 4.5 engine and disconnecting at the tank?
Any one have the part # for the fuel line connector to motor for a 1982 4.5 mercury, or just the size will do?
Thanks for any response I may recieve....
Think I finally figured out a strange problem when I changed my crankshaft to the newer powerhead. When I tried to fire it up all I got was a backfire each time I pulled the starter rope, so I thought I would switch plug wires so I put the bottom wire which has always been on the bottom...
Got the ole dude together but having hard time getting it started. Have very good spark on both spark plugs but I can't remember the settings on the carb high speed and low speed.
Oh yes chinewalker if you run across this post I apologize for not acknowledging your reply to my piston question...
Found a powerhead which almost looks new, no burnt paint and very little grease.($74.00 delivered) Decided to give up on trying to find a piston and rings for mine after scouring the top cyl. This new PH came off a GG9002B also but the crankshaft isn't like mine where the armature plate (or...
Just ruined a piston and cyl. wall on my 1956 5hp M/W motor. Will anything interchange with the original as the lower unit is in perfect condition or does anyone have any idea where I might find a power head for it?

A couple weeks ago I bought a package deal on a 12 ft. semi-v heavy alum. boat with 2 motors. One was a Johnson JW14 and the other a 1984 Mercury 4.5 single cyl. Neither motor has been run for several years. Finally got the JW14 running after replacing bad coil wire and rebuilding carb and...
Finally got the old 3hp running after several problems but ran into another problem today, wanted to run it one more time in the barrel before taking it to the river but after a very short run the power head was getting VERY VERY hot. the "pee" hole or fins were spitting a strong spray of water...
spent last couple days trying to get fire to bottom cyl. took the coil in today, had it checked, is good. checked plug wire, good-cleaned points and set to .020. changed top cyl condenser to bottom cyl still no fire and still had fire on top with bottom cyl condenser. coil is set flush with...
How do you put .010-.012 between the magnets on the coil and adjust to the flywheel mags then tighten the coil to the correct setting? I know there is better terminology for this but I sure don't know it. I am working on an old 3hp Johnson model JW14.
Appreciate any replies.....
