I've finally gotten everything tweaked and working right on my boat, just waiting for my 5 terminal ignition to get here.
I took the boat out today with the family just to cruise around and do a little fishing.
The boat is running well, the only issue that I've found is when I try to go fast...
I've got a 1970 Johnson 40hp electric shift that I've been collecting donor motors for.
I found a 1972 Evinrude 40hp electric shift that I can pick up fairly cheap with controls and whatnot.
Will the 72 have the same pieces the 70 has?

I've looked all over and can't find a carb kit for a 1970 Johnson 40es70a
All the kits I've run across are for either up to 68/69 or 71 and later. I have yet to find the carb kit for a 1970 40hp johnson.
Any help, or an oem part number for the complete kit?
I've got the 1970 electric shift johnson on the boat now, and hopefully everything is ironed out and it's ready to go.
But, I was told by several to have another motor ready to go because the shift solenoids aren't real reliable.
So I've got 2 1968 Johnson 33hp engines that are complete. One...
Last night my motor fired up on it's own(think I've got that solved)
It ran, out of water, for about 20-25 seconds before I made it out of the house and to the boat to kill it with the grounding switch(grounds out everything)
I found out, today, that a ground wire was actually a hot wire and...
Alright, I've got a 1970 Johnson 40hp Electric shift.
We've rewired the ignition piece of the wiring harness and put in a magneto ground on toggle switches to kill the motor.
We went out to the lake today and found that the battery had melted part of the terminal that the trolling motor was...
On the steering rod, one end is flat and one has a balljoint type fitting on it.
Is it imperative that the balljoint be connected to the motor, or is it ok to connect that end to the steering rod and the flat end to the motor?
I recently traded for a 1970 Johnson 40hp electric(selectric) shift motor.
The motor fires up and runs well.
The model number is 40es 70a
Serial Number J3295244
I'm having issues with the shift control. Not really issues I guess, just questions.
I've checked the resistance on both shift...
I've been looking at the seacast and don't believe I'll be able to make it work for this boat, just because the way everything is laid out in front of the transom.
No big deal.
The transom is trashed, even the aluminum got tore up a little bit. I bought it from a guy who bought it from a lady...
Alright, I now have setting at my house
1971 55hp Evinrude with the old cable type steering(can it be changed)
1982 40hp Mercury in pieces, that only ran half the time when it ran
198? 25hp Mercury in perfect working order
1981 65hp Suzuki DT65 with a jacked up lower unit
The 40 and 65 are...
I recently bought a basstracker that's in need of a lot of tlc. It came with a 40hp mercury that someone tried to work on and lost some pieces to:facepalm:
I've got a pretty decent 25hp mercury that runs out well and whatnot that we had on a 16 foot barge. It pushed the barge pretty well.
Do...
I bought this motor off of another forum.
The ad:
I bought it and a friend of the family that is a retired boat mechanic helpe me install it.
At the time, he didn't think to check the linkage adjustment and tried to walk me through it over the phone yesterday. He won't be able to actually...
I finally got into the motor on the rebel I picked up a few weeks ago.
It was rebuilt in 98 and the boat was parked in 2004-05 and hasn't been on the water since.
I put in new plugs, they're funny plugs that I've never seen before, no gap. Weird:confused:
Anyways, before the new plugs went...
