Periodically, the starter will spin without engaging on my '96 Intruder. I removed the plastic flywheel cover and then removed the Bendix drive and the gear it nests in. I cleaned the drive, lubing it with WD-40 and it operates freely. There were no chipped teeth in any of the gears or flywheel...
