These early 7.5 HP motors have a poorly designed head gasket.--No metal ring.-----A wise owner would do a compression test !

When shifting on a stand you must turn the propeller when operating the shift handle.

You do a maximum spark intensity test with a test device.----Store bought $10 or home made with cardboard , glue and wire.

On a 79 model 402 why would you push in the key for 5 seconds with key turned on ???

Model # of your motor is ?-------The question is---Does spark jump a gap of 1/4"?----That has nothing to do with the sparkplug !

Agreed----worked at a plant over 50 years ago.----Heavy duty ultrasonic cleaner.----Made the fluid dance when it was turned on.

Post the actual compression values here.-----And does spark jump a gap of at least 1/4" on both leads ?----It should shift each time...

And many folks still do not know how to use the wonderful electric primer valve on Johnson / Evinrude models.

Likely has the typical broken ring " syndrome "-----All of these suffer from that eventually.----Take the head off to have a look.
